It's ECE Week in Newfoundland and Labrador! ABCs and ECEs NL celebrates the work of Early Childhood Educators (ECEs). This work includes:

Can anyone find us all of these eggs for our basket?
Early Childhood Educators need all of these “eggs” 🥚🥚🥚 for an attractive total compensation package. We have to keep ECEs in the workforce and boost recruitment efforts. Without the ECE workforce there are no child care spaces for children in NL.

Thank you to all of the ECEs across our province for making today Egg-stra 🐣 special for children. Although today might have had some bunny hopping and egg hunts, ECEs play a vital role in our children’s lives every day by:

🧠 supporting brain development
💪 building emotional resilience
📞 fostering communication
📝 co-creating learning environments

We want to make sure that all children in our province have access to high quality, affordable, inclusive early learning environments.

I am reaching out to discuss the urgent matter of the potential cuts to $10-a-day child care in Newfoundland and Labrador.

I am a mother of two small children. I know parents with small children. I work with parents with small children. And I personally know Early Childhood Educators - the people who hold together a system that families rely on every single day while being chronically underpaid and undervalued.

Cutting affordable child care would be a reckless decision that punishes working families while pretending it’s responsible governance.

For many parents, $10-a-day daycare is the only reason they can stay in the workforce. Take that away and you will force families - especially mothers - into impossible choices: leaving jobs, cutting hours, or paying childcare costs that rival a mortgage payment. That isn’t good economic policy; it’s a step backwards.

Meanwhile, the Early Childhood Educators who make this system possible are already stretched thin and fighting for fair wages and basic respect for the work they do. These are the people responsible for caring for and educating the next generation, yet the system expects them to shoulder enormous responsibility for wages that barely reflect the importance of their role.

So let’s be very clear: if the government is looking for savings, targeting working families and the childcare system is the wrong place to start.

Middle-class families are tired of being told to tighten our belts while watching the few supports that actually help us get by, constantly threatened with cuts. $10-a-day childcare is not a luxury. It is infrastructure that allows people to work, support their families, and contribute to the economy.

If this program is weakened or cut, the message to families will be unmistakable: when tough decisions are made, working parents and childcare workers are expected to carry the burden.

You were elected to represent the people in your riding. I am asking you to raise this issue in government, advocate for families, and stand up for the educators who make this system work instead of allowing it to be dismantled.

If ECEs are left out to dry and this program is cut, I will single handedly organize a rally and be on the steps of Confederation Building the next day.
