There are approximately 44 sounds that make up speech in the English language and thousands of spellings to represent them.
Being able to accurately segment spoken word into the smallest units of sound is indicative of future academic success. The awareness of these units of sound can be practiced frequently, long before children are even writing!
Once children are able to print, they can slowly be introduced to the most common acceptable spellings of the sounds and start spelling and reading, starting with CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words E.g. c-a-t, l-e-t, s-i-p, etc.
*Take note: annunciation, dialect and accent impact interpretation of sound-spelling relationships and should be accounted for during phonological instruction. Demonstrating and instructing proper mouth articulation for speech sounds is crucial to the success of literacy interventions in individuals that have speech challenges.

Rhyming songs, tongue twisters with alliteration, clapping out syllables, and phoneme manipulation are fun and easy activities that cultivate the necessary skills for phonological awareness.
