Ok friends, I need to know your thoughts, as this is something (highly important) that comes up every now and then with my kiddos during our online turoring sessions...

The picture behind me (which I painted at a Pinot 🍷 & Paint 🎨 night - so much fun, even for a non-artist like myself!)... Is it a bear, or is it a wolf?

Swipe ➡️ for a close up and drop an emoji below to let me know which one you think it resembles most... And help me settle this with my students once and for all 😆

🐻 or 🐺 ???

Thoughts and prayers to all those brave teachers in the classroom today... 🙏 The day after Halloween would have to be one of the hardest days of the year 😜

A little look back over some Halloween-themed activities from last week (just a couple that I actually managed to snap pictures of!)... Including matching capital and lower case ghost letters, and word mapping with spooky stamps and stickers 👻

I have some "spook-tacular" Halloween-themed activities planned for my kiddos this week 👻

Head to my stories if you want to see one in action, and drop your favourite Halloween emoji in the comments! 🧡

When the student gives the teacher a sticker at the end of a tutoring session... 🤣

I must have done something right! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Have you heard of word mapping? It is an absolute game changer for developing successful reading and spelling skills.

This valuable activity promotes orthographic mapping skills, which is the process of connecting phonemes (sounds) to orthography (spelling) in words we know the meaning of. When we do this, the sound, spelling and meaning of the word is stored in our long-term memory and the word becomes a "sight word".

Mapping is far more effective than relying on flashcards or rote memorization.

So how does it work? Let's take the word hop.
👉 First, we sound out the word and place a pom-pom (or any other manipulative!) down to represent each sound we hear: /h/ /o/ /p/
👉 Next, we connect each sound to the letter that represents it: h o p
👉 Then, we write the word and read it aloud.

This mental process helps us to store words for immediate retrieval in order to become fluent readers 📚

Need some tips for how to make reading aloud fun for your little one?

👉 Be enthusiastic and expressive,

👉 Play games with rhyming words,

👉 Try "echo" reading (you read a line and your child repeats it),

👉 Engage them by asking questions about what might happen next, before you turn the page...

I'm yet to meet a kid who doesn't enjoy being read to, no matter their age! 📚 I recommend reading out loud to your kiddos as often as you can 💛

Check out the progress this Little Learner made in just TWO MONTHS of Glow and Grow literacy tutoring! 🤯

I love collecting data during each session so that I can track student progress. Seeing my students' growth and watching their confidence increase is definitely one of the highlights of my job 🥰

I love putting together resource packs for my new kiddos! ✏📓 💫

Resource packs differ slightly from student to student depending on their age, learning goals, and learning style.

This particular hands-on learner LOVES using the pop-it bracelet to "pop" sounds when orthographic mapping 🔤 ... And writing is always so much more fun on a whiteboard! 🙌

⚠️ Punctuation is important!

These examples always get a giggle... 🤣

Let's eat Grandma!

Let's eat, Grandma!
.. Use commas. 😉

And just like that, Summer break is over, and it's back to school tomorrow... For an hour, anyway 🤪

I'm so excited to welcome all my new students and families on board 💛 I can't wait to work with you and see your literacy skills grow this school year! 👩‍🏫
