Stepping into the past to understand the present!
PMA students had the unique opportunity to explore the historic Chinese family association halls of Vancouver’s Chinatown. These spaces have long been pillars of the community, offering support and connection to Chinese immigrants facing systemic barriers in early 20th-century British Columbia.
With as our guide, we learned how these associations helped Chinese Canadians navigate exclusionary laws, employment discrimination, and housing restrictions. We also had the privilege of watching society members play mahjong, a traditional game that remains a cornerstone of social life.
Experiencing these stories firsthand deepened our understanding of the struggles and resilience that have shaped Chinatown’s history. 🀄✨
