Last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the ARCQE Flight Showcase of Learning and it was an incredibly valuable experience for our program.
This provincial gathering brought educators together to reflect on intentional practice, pedagogical documentation, and emergent curriculum. A powerful reminder throughout the event was:
“When we intentionally invest in educators as professionals, we transform the conditions of children’s learning.”
Some key reflections I am excited to bring back to our program:
• Being more intentional in our daily interactions and moving from task driven routines to purpose driven practice
• Strengthening how we see and hear children and valuing their thinking and ideas
• Building children’s learner identity such as “I am a great builder, learner, friend...”
• Expanding documentation beyond licensing and parent communication to truly capture children’s thinking and growth
• Exploring new ways to document with children, not just for them
In the coming months you will begin to see us implementing:
• Floor books created collaboratively with children
• Living documentation walls that evolve with children’s ideas
• Individual child portfolios to make learning visible over time
• Educator learning stories that celebrate staff growth and reflective practice
We were also provided with wonderful professional resources and materials from ARCQE that will directly support our educators as we strengthen our documentation and reflective practice across the program.
The Showcase reinforced that documentation is not just about recording activities. It is about finding our why, making learning visible, and strengthening relationships between children, educators, and families.
