Dinner time in the woods. :-) Terrible food on these bushcraft campouts!! .

Cooking on the fire is a little harder than a stove but you can cook all the same things. Even rhubard crumble and pies. The nice cooking rack was made by Fox Elemental Journeys
Todays menu was a foraged green salad ( Dandelion, Queens cup shoots, young Thimbleberry leaves, radishes, cabbage) Smoked Salmon, Local Asparagus, Peppers and carrots with Tofu.

How many people does it take to make fire?? We started opening our bush camp Primal Skills workshop with a group bowdrill fire! Many hands make light work but it is still has its challenges.

Friction fire is a skill that takes practice and finding the best materials you can. It is a great exercise in perseverance, problem solving and determination. A great character building project without having to climb a mountain :-)

After 2 days of solid hard work and effort we got there!! The smoking that sets the hide to remain soft and stretchy and flexible after it gets wet. Well done all it is a great achievement to go home with such soft material.
The question is can you bear to cut it to make it into something??

What does it take to tan a hide. Tanning starts off messy and hairy and ends up with a beautiful stretchy soft material. (if done right) Fleshing, Dehairing and Graining on day one of workshop.

Its a great workout for the arms and you can either push or pull. So to complete the workout you really need to do both :-)

You can make a pair of pants/trousers out of your buckskin too!!
In this it took 2.5 deer hides. You can see one of the hides was smoked with a different wood and got a different colouring. In my experience it can really depend on what wood you use, how moist and how rotten it is will give different colours.

Now, i am not a purist and my time has many demands on it so i did use a sewing machine instead of hand stitching with sinew. Although i did for some parts of it.

Yep, those are deer antler buttons.

What to do with your Buckskin? Once you have gone through the process of tanning deer hide and have some buckskin what to make with it becomes the next question. The material is so precious from all the work and effort that it sometimes feels impossible to commit to cutting it and making it into something. It is a daunting prospect. Its not just a few bucks if you get it wrong. It's serious work.
This is a simple pair of center seam moccasins i made up.

Rabbit fur body warmer anyone? SOOO toasty and warm. Although haven't managed to put it to good use yet this winter. I am sure i will get the chance at some point. It took 14 meat rabbits for the body warmer some tanning and a needle and thread. Some great natural insulation power without the microplastics, fast fashion or price tag. Some how i don't think the fashion will catch on. What do you think, Rabbit body warmer?

Do you ever think about tanning furs for yourself? A stunning all natural bark tanned Bear. It took around 4 months in total to flesh, degrease, tan, dry and condition. The skins turns to a veg tan consistency and is nice and robust. Depending on the bark used it can dye the fur as well as the leather. For this blonde cinnamon bear i wanted to keep the colour as much as possible. What do you think?
