Dakota Mary MacDonald, from the Outreach School, has won the 2026 David Symington Scholarship for Fine Arts. Dakota will be attending the Graphic Design and Interactive Media program from the Toronto Film School. She begins in July, and will complete her program in two years, when she hopes to run her own graphic design business. Congratulations Dakota!
This $1000 award was established in 2025 by Stage North in memory of David Symington. David contributed a significant amount of time and energy as an active board member with Stage North, and Slave Lake Musical Theater Association and he taught drama at Roland Michener Secondary High School. The purpose of the award is to provide students graduating from a high school in Slave Lake the opportunity to pursue studies in visual arts and arts-related careers. David's deep love of education, teaching, music and the performing arts was evident in all his community involvements. His work will be memorialized through this scholarship.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Knowledge Keeper Ramzey Zallum from Joussard for joining us and sharing such meaningful teachings with our students. Along with providing fish for a fish fry, he shared stories and teachings about trapping and the important role the fur trade played for Indigenous and Mรฉtis people in the past. Students learned how trapping was a way of life that helped provide for families and communities through sustainability, hard work, and connection to the land.
