Room to Bloom has a new family member, Daisy the Goldendoodle. Our family has allergies to dogs and we’ve had no reactions at our house to her. She is playful, sweet and we are all in love!

Imagine this:you had a HORRIBLE day,you come home upset & your partner yells at you to go sit alone in the next room. You're not allowed to come out until you've completely calmed yourself down, on your own.

Kinda effed up,right?

When we send our kids away during tantrums/times of distress:
👎 They don't learn to handle the situation better next time
👎 They don't actually reflect on behavior instead, they're flooded with feelings of anger/ abandonment
👎 We signal that big feelings aren't OK in our family

In their Time article,my mentor + colleague Dr. Dan Siegel + Dr. Tina Bryson:
"Decades of research in attachment demonstrate that particularly in times of distress, we need to be near and be soothed by the people who care for us.But when children lose emotional control, parents often put them in their room or by themselves in the “naughty chair,” meaning that in this moment of emotional distress they have to suffer alone. When the parental response is to isolate the child, an instinctual psychological need of the child goes unmet. In fact, brain imaging shows that the experience of relational pain like that caused by rejection looks very similar to the experience of physical pain in terms of brain activity.”

So instead, stay with them.Show them you won't leave them when they have big feelings or make a mistake:
✨You're really upset.I'm right here with you
✨You're feeling angry, it's OK to feel angry, it's not OK to hit.I'm moving baby to keep her safe

All feelings are OK.All behavior is NOT.We can stay firm on boundaries, while still being there.

"But how do we show them that the behavior is NOT OK?! We're supposed to be all rainbows? Kids need discipline!" Yes! The latin root for the word discipline is "disciple" which means, to teach. And fear is a terrible teacher.

When do kids learn best? During calm, collaborative moments. NOT during heightened tantrum moments.Later, at a calm moment, teach better behavior + coping skills.

✨Want to learn how to discipline in a way that WORKS + protects your child's self esteem?Want to end power struggles for good? Our course teaches you how.For parents with kids aged 1-6. Link in bio

❤️ HERE'S WHAT EVERY TODDLER NEEDS TO HEAR ❤️

Everyone, especially toddlers, just want to be seen, heard, and
unconditionally loved and accepted. Accepting who your child is at their core, relating to them and their greatness no matter their behavior is the foundation of unconditional love. I invite you to practice communicating YOUR unconditional love so that your TODDLER feels emotionally and physically safe in both the easeful and the challenging moments.

Afterall, toddlerhood can be a wild ride for both you and your LO and experimenting, testing, and losing patience from time to time is to be expected. It takes courage to forgive yourself and your child for being human (and vice versa) and to parent with an open heart. 👦🏽👧🏼👦🏻👧🏾

What else would you add to the list? ↓

Modelling , time-ins , Co regulation, setting collaborative boundaries are all healthy ways of navigating challenging situations.

Imagine if every time you didn't get a good grade, made a mistake, or didn't meet your spouse's expectations, they came and took away all of your things?

There are healthier ways to relate. When we get stuck in power dynamics we could be missing an opportunity to really help our kids through something and help them gain tools to better navigate the world.

-Sujai, Gentle Parents Unite💕

P.S Please don't buy and wrap presents for children and threaten to throw or give them away to modify their behavior. There are healthier ways to help children feel and behave better.

With love,
Lelia.

These aren't modern crazes we've taken up.

They aren't terrible habits we've gotten ourselves into, that need to be stopped asap before they ruin our babies.

They are ancient parenting practices, and they are the blueprint on your newborn baby's brain and what they expect from you as soon as they are born.

This is why the work that I do with families antenatally, and with newborns up to 6 months is purely about setting expectations for normal newborn sleep, feeding and creating secure bonds, and looking after yourself as well.

Sometimes just knowing what's normal is enough and you can carry on following that ancient intuition that was always within you .

Plot twist❗️All of these ‘what ifs’ are the truth. ⁣

Queridxs, there is nothing wrong with you, your children love you, and they know you love them, and parenting is hard (the HARDEST) but you’re doing beautifully, even when you mess up sometimes, even when you mess up a lot. Decolonizing our families is no joke. It’s labor and it’s messy. We gotchu. Give yourself a tight hug and receive a tighter one from us. ❤️⁣

Plot twist❗️ ⁣

Yep, you read correctly- NORMAL!!⠀

I’m not saying it’s OK and I’m not saying it doesn’t need a boundary but what I am saying is, this is a common response from a toddler who is frustrated. Little people don’t have fully wired brains, they have strong impulses and an under developed pre frontal cortex. They use their bodies to express big emotions.⠀

So it is important in these moments that we don’t make assumptions about our child’s personality, that we refrain from labelling them or seeing this as part of who they are. Their inability to manage big emotions at such a young age is not an indicator of who they will become.⠀

Let that sink in- your toddler’s inability to manage big emotions is not an indicator of who they will become.⠀

*Your toddler is not an aggressive person⠀
*Your toddler is not a mean person⠀
*Your toddler is not a selfish person⠀

Your toddler is a little person with big feelings who needs our understanding and our empathy.⠀

So what do we do?

*Stay in the moment and try not to get caught up in stories about what this means about your child’s personality - be present.⠀
*Keep yourself regulated.⠀
*Set clear and authentic limits - “I won’t let you hit, I’m going to help you by holding your arms”⠀
*Remain physically close.⠀
*Stay connected and empathic.⠀
*Meet the unmet need (hunger, connection, fatigue)⠀
*Engage in a regulation activity together.⠀
