It could still be a while before they are able to add to their medal collections, but at least they have been able to see some welcome faces in person after a long absence.
The Sherwood Park Karate-Do Club has recently started training together outdoors at Cottonwood Park, using proper social distancing practices, of course.
“We plan to do more as we have lost our usual place at New Horizons School gym due to COVID 19,” said Sherwood Park Karate-Do chief instructor Steve Hartnett. “We have also continued our training with Zoom during this pandemic.”
When competition eventually resumes, the local club will be looking to add to an already high medal count from recent years.
Their last tournament before coronavirus crisis saw the Sherwood squad capture 12 medals at the Northeast Alberta Genbukai Karate Tournament in St. Paul, Alta.
Winning gold medals in kata (forms) were Shane Prasad, Tyler Heit and Lyndon Frieson; while bronze medals were captured by Rylan Kallichuk and Mark Fessenden.
In kobudo (weapons), a silver was taken home by Frieson.
And in kumite (sparring), Fessenden was the lone gold medalist, with silvers going to Prasad, Heit, Kallichuk and Kevin Yakiwchuk and a bronze to Rowan Bartok.
“It was a stand-out performance from Sherwood Park orange belt Tyler Heit, who competed in a group of all higher belts,” Hartnett said. “Dojo mates having to fight each other at the tournament did not take away from their respect and friendship back in the karate class. We are and always will be a tight club. They all make me proud.”
