Have you ever played Who What Where? It’s a hilarious art game that I love to play with my students. The Who is an animal or character. The What is an action word. And the Where is a place or location where it happens. For example, a dog playing soccer on the moon. The object of the game is to put everything together in a single picture and have the other players guess. It challenges students to synthesize and problem solve in a creative way - just like an illustrator would when given a brief!
For this project, I decided to build on our quick draw game and turn it into a more involved painting. Can you guess what each student is trying to convey?

Cars and trucks! Some fun mixed media paintings by my students in grade 1-6. There truly was a divide between my kiddos who draw vehicles over and over, and then artists (like me, true confession!) who rarely if ever do.
I was inspired by the art of Richard Scarry and mid-century modern, 60s style retro cars. We looked at the basic shapes and then riffed on the many ways you can customize your ride with lights, bumpers, wheel wells, and goofy tops. We had a blast creating a giant highway, using some of our skills and a lot of imagination.

Polar bears! So proud of my teen students. They have been exploring liquid watercolour (instead of our usual pan paints). I really wanted to use the deepest blues - ultramarine, phthalo, and indigo and love my Holbein paints. They created beautiful glazes with many patient layers.

Polar bears! Some wonderful chubby bears painted by my Art Adventures (Gr K-3) and Art Explorers (Gr 1-9) classes . I led them through some drawing exercises where we looked for shapes and movement. You’ll notice that each student decided to focus on something different in each painting, no two are exactly the same, just the way I like it! You might think that they are white in colour, but their fur is yellow ochre and buttercream…a sitting polar bear looks a lot like a pear! 🍐 🐻❄️

Tiny landscapes! Don’t you love these delicate paintings created by my Tween art class? Each student had four 4x4” pieces of paper to play with, which was a great way to take the pressure off and experiment.
I gave them a limited palette of colours - ultramarine, ochre, and rose madder, Payne’s grey and violet. We practiced controlling our water, diluting colour to make soft tones of snow and gentle shadows, and used wet into wet to make lovely skies. The key challenge for my students was to be patient! To gradually build up the layers instead of finishing it in one go!
This was their first experience using liquid watercolor paints (in tubes rather than pan paints). My favorite brands are Schminke, Holbein, Daniel Smith, and Windsor & Newton.

Hearts upon hearts! A lovely Valentines project from last week, this was a fun colour-mixing game in acrylic. The heart art challenge was to mix a color (warm or cool), paint a heart, and then change the colour a little bit for the next heart by either adding more white or another hue. No two hearts should be the same colour. And we added two or three layers on each heart before we added the white background. I love fuchsia under-painting peeking through. Lots of layers and texture here! 🩷🧡💛💜

Chickadees! We recently did a unit on winter birds in my weekly art classes. Charcoal was a fun and active way to explore shapes and shading of these chippy grey and black birds, adding texture by smudging, adding lines, and taking away.
If you’re interested in hopping into one of my art classes, I have space available! Register on my website, link in bio

Merry Christmas and happy new year! Hope you’re warm and cozy with family, friends, cookies, eggnog, puzzles and all good things. Here are some cozy Christmas rooms painted by my Saturday Art Club students in Gr 1-5. I particularly love the unicorn’s Christmas tree and all the decorations it put up using its horn. 🎄🦄
