Digital infrastructure is power. Who wields it?
Budget 2025 commits $925.6 million to build a Sovereign Canadian Cloud and national AI compute infrastructure, a foundational shift in how our country manages data and delivers services. While the promise of good technology is not in doubt, the real issues at stake are our freedoms, protection from surveillance, and accountable governance in a digital era.
The urgent, unanswered questions are about control, not capability:
· Who audits the algorithms? As governments worldwide deploy AI for everything from fraud detection to public services, the risks of "black-box" decision-making, bias, and error are real. We need enforceable mandates for Explainable AI (XAI) and independent, third-party algorithmic audits to ensure systems are fair and their logic is traceable.
· What protections exist for Canadians? Data sovereignty, keeping our data under Canadian law is a stated goal. However, using global cloud providers creates a shared security model and risks subjecting Canadian data to foreign laws. Protections must be more than contractual; they require robust, Canadian-controlled encryption and clear laws.
· Who builds, controls, and owns the data? Will this public infrastructure be built by a handful of powerful private entities, leading to undue influence? Canadians must own and control their data. The government must maintain exclusive control over encryption keys, ensuring data cannot be accessed without Canadian authorization, even if stored on foreign-operated servers.
This cannot be done in secret. Digital infrastructure is a public asset and must be subject to full parliamentary scrutiny. We need transparent frameworks built on algorithmic governance, public oversight dashboards, and human accountability for automated decisions. The goal is not to hinder innovation but to ensure it serves the public good with unwavering transparency and accountability.

The public's powerful voice has made a difference on cloned meat.
After thousands of Canadians raised their concerns with Health Canada, the government has paused its plan to allow cloned-animal products into our food supply, a plan that lacked both transparency and proper oversight.
This proves that when people ask tough questions and refuse to stay silent, the system must stop, listen, and reconsider.
Never underestimate the power of your voice. Never think you are "just one person." When Canadians from all walks of life come together, we can move mountains.
This is democracy in action: an informed public holding its government accountable.

Amidst my parliamentary duties this past week, I've been working with churches and community partners to coordinate relief for Jamaica in the wake of a historic Category 5 hurricane. Entire towns have been flattened, leaving scenes reminiscent of war zones. The devastation is immense, but so is the determination to help.
Here in Haldimand-Norfolk, we are already taking action. Berlo's Best Farm has dispatched a 40-foot container of supplies bound for Montego Bay, and they continue to accept donations of food, tools, and hygiene products. I also want to acknowledge Pastor Pat Francis and the coalition of churches who have mobilized to send another 40-foot container of essential goods to the hardest-hit areas.
These swift, selfless efforts prove that when communities unite, faith and compassion can accomplish what bureaucracy cannot. As the long rebuilding process begins, let's continue to pray, give, and support our neighbours with ties to Jamaica. In these moments of profound loss, we see the very best of humanity: people choosing to lift each other up when everything else has been torn down.

While Canadians are struggling to afford food and housing, the Liberal government has tabled a budget with a staggering $78.3 billion deficit. This isn't a plan for affordability.
It's a path to more debt and higher costs. Conservatives are fighting for a plan that would bring prices down and restore fiscal sanity.

A recent court decision is causing deep uncertainty for homeowners in Richmond, B.C. Many have received a formal notice from the City, warning that the Cowichan Tribes v. Canada ruling could impact the "status and validity" of their property titles.
For generations, the principle of clear and secure property title has been a foundation of family security and economic stability. The court's recognition of Aboriginal title overlying existing fee simple properties, however, has created legitimate questions about how these rights coexist.
From my conversations, it's clear that people are not against reconciliation. Their fear is rooted in potentially losing the certainty, value, and stability of the homes they have invested in and built their lives around.
Canadians deserve clarity and confidence. The federal government has a responsibility to act swiftly, to explain what this ruling means for property rights and to provide a path forward that restores trust in the security of homeownership.

society that fails to protect its children has lost its moral compass.
The recent Supreme Court decision serves as a stark reminder: our laws must defend the most vulnerable among us. We must be a society courageous enough to draw a clear, uncompromising line.
Protecting children transcends politics, it is a fundamental test of our humanity.
Our justice system must be unequivocal: those who harm children will face stern, unequivocal consequences. There can be no leniency.
