📢 Important Update for Adult Education & Vocational Training Students

Over the past few weeks, many students and prospective candidates have expressed concerns regarding Québec's proposed Bill 8.

Bill 8, introduced by Jean-François Roberge, Minister of the French Language, would amend the Charter of the French Language and require adults wishing to study in Adult General Education or Vocational Training in English to hold a certificate of eligibility, similar to the requirements currently in place in the youth sector.

While the bill was presented as a measure to protect the French language, many organizations within the English-speaking educational community raised concerns about its potential impact on access to education and workforce development. In response, several groups, including the Leading English Education and Resource Network (LCEEQ), took action by submitting letters and participating in advocacy efforts highlighting the possible consequences of the proposed legislation.

As the National Assembly adjourned for the summer recess, Bill 8 was not among the legislation adopted before the break. This means that, for now, the proposed changes have not been implemented.

The director of the Lennoxville Vocational Training Centre is vowing her school will not close despite Bill 8 projections that could eliminate up to 85 per cent of its students — even as she admits the centre has no idea what it would look like on the other side.
Diane Lavers spoke with The Pulse on June 11 in her first extended public comments since the Eastern Townships School Board warned earlier this week that the legislation could gut adult education and vocational training across the region.
