Shawnigan Lake School is an independent co-educational boarding school for ages 13 –18 in Canada.

Shawnigan Lake School was founded in 1916 by Christopher Windley Lonsdale in a then-secluded west coast rainforest on Vancouver Island. Modeled after Westminster School (the Founder’s alma mater), Shawnigan’s inaugural class consisted of six students. It would rapidly expand in its early years, and by the end of its first decade, boasted nearly 100 boarders, a well-equipped gymnasium, and a growin

to April’s Under the Sea–themed gala

This past spring, our community came together for an “Under the Sea”-themed fundraising gala inspired by The Little Mermaid—and, more importantly, by a student-led mission to make a difference.

Grade 11 student Jackson F. organized the sold-out gala as part of his capstone project, raising $8,000 toward his goal of providing shoes for every student at a primary school in South Africa.

A throwback to June and our Musical Theatre Cabaret.
Students performed songs spanning decades of musical theatre, with senior students taking the lead on song choices, choreography and blocking.

A great evening of performances — and a chance for students to take on new roles, build confidence and explore what’s next.

In just a few short weeks, Stag Café will be back for a new school year!

One of the things that makes Shawnigan unique is the opportunity for students to learn entrepreneurship by actually running a business. Through Stag Café, students take on roles across the organization, gaining hands-on experience in everything from menu development and inventory to finance, operations, scheduling, and customer service.

For more than 20 years, Stag Café has been an important part of the Shawnigan experience, giving students the opportunity to turn ideas into action and classroom learning into real-world experience.

A special thank you to last year’s Stag team for all of your hard work and commitment throughout the year.

A strong finish for Shawnigan rowers at the BC Summer Games.

On the final day of racing, Jack P. captured two gold medals in the men’s 1x and 2x, winning the 2x by five seconds and the 1x by an impressive 12-second margin. He also earned two silver medals with a close finish in the 4x and another strong performance in the mixed 4x.

Christian P. also had an excellent regatta, advancing to the men’s 2x final and finishing sixth overall.

Congratulations to all the rowers who represented Shawnigan at these games which showed the strength of the Shawnigan rowing program on the provincial stage.

One of the magical things about Shawnigan is the unique connection between our students and the faculty. As a student once shared, "Teachers here don't just listen because they have to. They listen because they want to know you."

Mrs. Lynne Grass perfectly represents the standard our staff strives for every day. Her 37 years in the classroom and on the squash courts reflect the deep commitment that defines the Shawnigan experience. She is a foundational part of the faculty that shapes lives for generations, showing what it truly means to guide, challenge, and care for our students.
