Algoma University

Algoma University Public university with a Special Mission of cross-cultural learning. Undergrad & Master's programs. Welcome to Algoma University's page. The Sault Ste.

We're glad you're here. This page provides a place to discuss all things Algoma: our programs, research, campus, events, news and announcements, and more. As a teaching-focused university, Algoma provides a range of degrees and certificates spanning the liberal arts, sciences and professional disciplines; including offerings through its Schools of Business and Economics, Computer Science and Technology, Life Sciences and the Environment and Social Work. Located on three unique campus locations in Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton and Timmins, Algoma offers an immersive and personal educational experience. Algoma prides itself on being student-centric, offering endless opportunities inside and outside the classroom. Classes are kept small and professors are always available to help. Experiential learning is a crucial element of Algoma’s approach, helping students apply what they learn in the real world. Marie campus, located on the site of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School, provides a unique, historically rich setting for a cross-cultural community in which Anishinaabe (First Nation, Métis, and Inuit), Canadian, and international students learn from one another in a spirit of friendship and respect while advancing efforts to address truth, healing and reconciliation. In order to address community needs, Algoma continues to expand facilities and programming in downtown Brampton. New initiatives such as the Centre for Social, Cultural and Economic Innovation and aviation management programming, expand upon degree and certificate offerings in business, computer science and psychology. Algoma offers numerous graduate certificates, aimed at students who have already completed a degree. Certificates provide students with an opportunity to broaden their knowledge, while developing new perspectives in new disciplines, giving them an edge in the post-graduate job market.

Some stories really do come full circle. 💙

In 2008, Algoma University celebrated its first day of classes as an independent university by visiting the hospital and welcoming the babies born that day with a graduation cap, an Algoma U bib and a little something to start their journey.

One of those babies is now an Algoma U student. 🎓

18 years later, she’s traded in her baby bib for an Algoma U student ID!

Throughout the day, the Seven Grandfather Teachings were reflected in the people, conversations, and experiences that reminded us of the importance of carrying these teachings forward, not just today, but every day.

One week from today, on September 30, marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a time to honour residential school Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting and intergenerational impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous Peoples, families and communities.

At Algoma University, this day holds a deep connection to our Special Mission, rooted in Chief Shingwauk’s vision of sharing, healing and learning.

We invite our Algoma U community to honour this day through remembrance, reflection and learning. Swipe to explore National Day for Truth and Reconciliation events taking place across our Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton and Timmins campuses, and learn more about our Special Mission.

As we wear orange and come together on September 30, may we carry the lessons of this day forward and continue the work of truth and reconciliation throughout the year. 🧡

A transformative investment in the future of our students. 🎓

Algoma University is honoured to receive a $1.5 million gift from the Joyce Family Foundation, establishing a new renewable bursary program for first-year local students who demonstrate financial need and personal resilience.

Through this generous gift, 12 students will receive $5,000 per year toward their studies, for up to four years. The bursaries are designed to help students who may face barriers to post-secondary education, including First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and first-generation learners.

The gift reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that access to higher education is not determined by circumstance, while creating opportunities that can have a lasting impact on students, their families and our region.

Thank you to the Joyce Family Foundation for this extraordinary investment in Algoma University students and for continuing Ron Joyce’s legacy of creating opportunities for young Canadians. We are incredibly grateful for your confidence in our students and their potential. ❤️
