A student approached his master and said “Master, I am so bored watching my breath. Just in and out, in and out. I think I need to work with something more interesting.” “I agree”, replied the master, “come with me.” The master leads the student to the river. He grabs the student by the neck and holds him under the water until he begins to struggle. As he releases the sputtering, stuttering student, he asks gently, “Now are you bored with your breath?”

Attachment was my mother, and anger was my father. They both died, so I have nothing to do. Now I do not need to do anything.” Meditation will become your very nature when you give up attachment, anger, and pride. Then you will not have to pose for meditation, for your whole life will be a sort of meditation.

Swami Rama is a kindred soul for those of us on the spiritual joyride.

In one of his books, “Living With the Himalayan Masters,” he tells the story of a swami of his acquaintance. The swami’s disciples felt he was very ill, so much so that death might very well be imminent. They asked Swami Rama to come and assess the situation.

Here’s Swami Rama’s narrative:

When I entered he sat up and I asked, “Swamiji, what is the matter?”

He said, “Nothing is the matter. Why do you ask?”

I told him, “Everybody’s worried.”

He said, “I used to meditate for two things. But today my parents died and I am in sorrow, so I am not meditating.” His language was entirely mystical.

I said, “Your parents died? You are a swami. You have nothing to do with parents.”

“No, no,” he said. “You also have parents. When they die you will understand.” He continued: “Attachment was my mother, and anger was my father. They both died, so I have nothing to do. Now I do not need to do anything.”

Meditation will become your very nature when you give up attachment, anger, and pride. Then you will not have to pose for meditation, for your whole life will be a sort of meditation.
