Last weekend, our another AgSTEM Camp immersed young minds in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and data visualization activities designed to spark curiosity and develop essential life skills.
Hands-On Science:
• DNA Extraction – becoming molecular biologists!
• Mystery Powder Challenge – using physical & chemical properties to solve the case.
• Paper Ring Chain & Bridge Building – testing creativity, strength, and engineering design.
• Nature Walk – learning from the greatest teacher of all… the outdoors!
Skill development:
• Intro to Excel – understanding data and organization
• Troubleshooting & Problem Solving – turning “failures” into learning opportunities.
• Collaboration & Team Building – working together under time limits to achieve big goals.
• Step-by-Step Complex Processes – patience + persistence = success!
The theme of this CAMP was simple: “TRY, FAIL, LEARN, and TRY Again!”
It was truly inspiring to see our campers experiment, ask questions, and think critically — all while having fun and building friendships. These skills will serve them for life, whether in science, school, or beyond.

🌾🦋 Saskatoon Sidewalk Safari: Where Weeds Are Wild, Flowers Are Fierce, and Science is EVERYWHERE! 🔍🌼
Buckle up, AgSTEMversians -
This morning, we just took a walk down a regular Saskatoon sidewalk and discovered a secret jungle of biodiversity hiding in plain sight! 🌿🕵️♂️
🎉 Meet the stars of the roadside Plant Power Squad:
⦁ Dandelion – officially gone to fluff mode, launching seed-parachutes like botanical astronauts 🚀
⦁ Yellow Sweet Clover – bee hot spots screaming "summer's here!"
⦁ White Clover – sweet, small, secretly fixing nitrogen like underground engineers
⦁ Geranium – tough little warriors with bright blooms, growing in sidewalk cracks like “Little soil? No problem.”
⦁ Chamomile – soft, sweet, and secretly medicinal — like the grandma of the plant world
⦁ Wild Mustard – bright yellow rebels growing like they OWN the ditch (and honestly… they kinda do)
🌍 This is urban biodiversity. And Saskatoon’s got LOTS of it — right beside roads, under stop signs, between cracks in the sidewalk.
So AgSTEMversians:
🕵️♀️ Go on your own Sidewalk Safari and find:
✅ A flower with flying seeds
✅ A sneaky chamomile pretending to be a daisy
✅ A mustard bloom taking over the ditch like a boss
📸 Take a pic, sketch what you saw, or just tell us what made you go “WHOA!”

🌱✨ “WAIT… A SEED HAS A SNACK PACK?!” ✨🌱
Yup! And it eats it before it even grows leaves! 😮
We soaked some seeds in water… and after two days — BOOM 💥 — tiny roots started to pop out and came out of their shell known as "seed coat"!
The kids were AMAZED. But then came the big question…
🤔 “Where does the seed get its food if it’s not even in the soil yet?”
💡 Here’s the secret:
Every seed is packed with its very own snack pack — called a "cotyledon"!
It’s like the seed's emergency lunchbox, full of energy and nutrients.
When we give the seed water + warmth, it wakes up from its nap and starts to grow.
But before it can make food from the sun like a big plant…
🌱 it munches on its built-in snack pack to grow its first root and shoot!

🌱Our early July STEM Camp was a week full of curiosity, creativity, and "whoa!" moments! 🔍✨
👩🔬 Kids became junior scientists
🎉 And most importantly—had a total blast learning!
Another AgSTEM Camp is landing in August -- another chance to dig into science, tech, and the magic of plants—like never before. 🌻⚙️💡
Stay tuned, because registration opens soon!

🥔✨ Why We covered chopped potatoes in water 💦
🙏🏽 This past weekend we were helping make Langar at Gurudwara Sahib. We were peeling potatoes 🥔🥔🥔 for the sabji, and a gentle reminder came:👉 “Quick! Cover them with water, or they’ll turn brown!”
💡 That simple step took me back to science class—and it’s all about something called PPO (Polyphenol Oxidase).
💧 Covering those potato pieces with water keeps the air away, stops PPO from acting up, and keeps our potatoes looking fresh and golden for longer. 🥔💛
🙏🏽 Grateful for the chance to serve, learn, and share.
👉 Other than potatoes, which fruits or vegetables have you noticed turn brown after cutting or peeling?
