Rev. Dr. Gordon Jensen and Rev. Dr. Kyle Schiefelbein-Guerrero recently represented Canadian ELCIC scholarship at the International Congress for Luther Research in Aarhus, Denmark.

Dr. Jensen presented “Putting Morality in its Place,” examining Luther’s insistence that natural law, rather than Scripture, provides the basis for morality in civil society because it must serve the whole community.

Dr. Schiefelbein-Guerrero gave two presentations. His seminar paper explored consolation and neighbourliness in Luther’s theology. His second presentation, “Luther and Leading in Ministry: What Does This Mean for Theological Education?”, proposed five interconnected dimensions of leadership and ministry: preaching and presiding, pastoral caregiving, prophetic witness, pedagogical teaching, and public leadership.

His presentation emphasized that ministry is not primarily about status or institutional maintenance, but about service to the Word that forms communities, consoles consciences, and sends people into the world for the sake of their neighbours. As Dr. Schiefelbein-Guerrero asked, “What kind of people and communities is the gospel shaping for faithful ministry in the generations to come?”

Fifty years ago, Rev. Pamela McGee became the first woman ordained to Lutheran ministry in Canada. This anniversary invites us to remember that milestone and the generations of women whose ministry, scholarship, leadership, and witness have continued to shape the church.

A new issue of Consensus: A Canadian Journal of Public Theology marks the 50th anniversary of the ordination of women in Canadian Lutheranism.

Rooted in Canadian Lutheran life, Consensus understands public theology broadly. Its readership and contributors reflect the ecumenical relationships of the ELCIC, including full communion with the Anglican Church of Canada, as well as the wide diversity of religious and non-religious backgrounds represented in our seminaries. Alongside articles, the journal publishes sermons, book reviews, and research.

LTS voices are among the contributors. Rev. Dr. Kyle Schiefelbein-Guerrero introduces the issue with a commemorative foreword; Rev. Dr. Kayko Driedger Hesslein contributes “I Never Thought I’d Be the Professor!”; and Dr. Ellen Duffield, a recent graduate of our Doctor of Ministry program, also contributes.

Consensus is co-sponsored by Lutheran Theological Seminary and Martin Luther University College.

This is what getting ready for an international Luther Congress looks like.

Rev. Dr. Kyle Schiefelbein-Guerrero is putting the finishing touches on a paper he will present next week at the 15th International Congress for Luther Research, at Aarhus University in Denmark.
The Congress brings Luther scholars from around the world together only every four or five years, making it a significant international gathering in the field.

His paper, “Consolation in Luther’s Neighbourly Theology,” will be presented as part of a seminar on Luther’s theology and practice of pastoral care and counsel.

At the heart of the paper is a question about what happens when theology is actually lived out in relationship with others.
He explores neighbourliness as an important implication of Luther’s theology: faith moves outward into freedom, service, care, and responsibility for one another. In particular, he looks at consolation as one of the ways this neighbourly theology takes shape.

For Dr. KSG, consolation is more than a private or therapeutic exchange between two people. It is something mutual and communal, rooted in our relationships with God, one another, and creation.

The paper also asks what this kind of mutual consolation might mean in a culture often shaped by scarcity, competition, and judgments about who is worthy of care.

A new video from our 2026 Conclusio Eucharist is now available on YouTube.

Recorded in St. Andrew’s Chapel on May 29, the video includes a reading by Dr. Bernon Lee and the sermon given by Rev. Dr. Ralph Carl Wushke.

Conclusio brings the academic year to a close around the Eucharist, gathering students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends in worship, thanksgiving, and Holy Communion.

We’re delighted to celebrate the Rev. Dr. Kayko Driedger Hesslein and the Rev. Dr. Kyle K. Schiefelbein-Guerrero, who contributed chapters to The Oxford Handbook of Digital Theology.

Professor Driedger Hesslein is the author of “Digital Ecclesiology,” exploring the relationship between digital culture and the church, while Professor Schiefelbein-Guerrero is the author of “Online Liturgies,” examining worship in digital spaces.

Published online by Oxford University Press on June 5, 2026, the handbook brings together scholars from around the world to consider how digital technology is shaping theology, Christian ministry and the life of the church. The print edition became available on July 9, 2026.

Earlier this month, Rev. Dr. Kyle Schiefelbein-Guerrero, LTS Grace Professor of Leadership, joined worship leaders, artists, and theologians in Whitehorse for the Whitehorse Worship Arts Festival.

Kyle’s presentation, From Death to Life: The Ritual Foundations of Healing, explored how Christian communities can draw upon theology, ritual, and liturgical practice to move from death-dealing patterns toward life-giving practices of affirmation and healing.

The workshop included material Kyle recently developed for the ELCA’s Q***r Confirmation program and Sundays and Seasons, inviting participants to consider how worship can help communities navigate sorrow and hope, death and life.

At LTS, we are grateful for the ways our faculty connect deep theological reflection with the lived practices of ministry across Western Canada and beyond.
