In July 2026, veterinarians confirmed Saskatchewan's first case of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV2). RHDV2 is a highly contagious and often fatal disease of domestic rabbits, feral rabbits, wild rabbits and hares. It doesn't cause disease in humans or other animal species.

🐇 If you own rabbits, please take these important steps:

• contact your local veterinarian to have rabbits annually vaccinated for RHDV2
• keep rabbits housed indoors since the disease can be spread by contact or through food
• prevent contact with wild rabbits, hares or feral rabbits

Suzy is "the ruler of all dogs," according to her loving owner, Eryn Audette, a Regina-based scent detection trainer who teaches dogs to detect and identify specific odours.

When Suzy was diagnosed with a nasal tumour, Audette knew exactly what to do. After being referred to the Veterinary Medical Centre, Suzy became one of the first patients to receive radiation therapy using the college's new state-of-the-art linear accelerator.

The results were remarkable: the radiation treatments significantly decreased the size of Suzy's tumour, and she's back to being the spunky, lively basset hound that her family knows and loves.

"It gave me my dog back," said Audette, who wanted to show her appreciation for the WCVM oncology team. She and members of her scent detection community raised $2,000 for the WCVM's Inspiration Oncology Fund, which supports canine cancer research at the college.

The bond between humans and animals is more powerful than you might think. 🐶

That's why Dr. Colleen Dell, professor and Centennial Enhancement Chair in One Health and Wellness, leads the PAWsitive Connections Lab. Her team explores the impact of human-animal relationships and delivers community-based therapy dog programs that support health and well-being.

With a $2.5-million investment from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Dell and her collaborators will further investigate how our connections with animals influence human health.

IMPORTANT SERVICE ALERT: as of Tuesday, Aug. 4, the small animal emergency and critical care service at the WCVM Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC) is over capacity and may only accept life-threatening cases (red zone).

If you have a pet with a life-threatening condition, please call 306-966-7126 in advance (regardless of the time, day or night) so the VMC clinical team can discuss the case and determine if the veterinary teaching hospital is able to accept the case based on its current resources.

Due to the high number of cases in the VMC, please be aware that you will need to contact another veterinary clinic for assistance.

The VMC clinical team thanks everyone for their understanding and co-operation.

‼️ IMPORTANT SERVICE ALERT: the zoo, exotics and wildlife service will be temporarily paused from July 22 to Aug. 17 (inclusive).

During this time, the hospital will not be able to offer referral services, regular appointments, triage or emergency services for exotic pets in the Small Animal Clinic.

All regular activities of the clinical service — including those for wildlife patients — will resume once the service’s clinical specialists return to work on Aug. 18.

If you require veterinary care for your pet from July 22 to Aug. 17, please contact a veterinary clinic in your community. An expanded list of veterinary clinics that accept exotic and avian patients can be found here: https://vmc.usask.ca/zoo-exotics-and-wildlife-service-temporary-pause.php

SASKATCHEWAN DAY HOURS: regular clinical services at the Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC) will be closed on Saskatchewan Day, Monday, August 3.

➡️ Emergency services for small animal and large animal cases are available 24/7 throughout the holiday weekend. However, the VMC’s small animal emergency team may restrict patient intake to life-threatening cases only from 10 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. each evening/night based on hospital capacity. Whenever caseload and staffing permits, the clinical team will see patients that fall under the urgent condition.

➡️ Before bringing an emergency patient to the VMC, call in advance (306-966-7126) — regardless of the time — so our clinical team is aware of the incoming case.

➡️ The VMC pharmacy is closed on weekends and statutory holidays (including August 3).

➡️ Regular clinical services will resume on Tuesday, August 4.

We're so proud of all award recipients with roots, including the following individuals:

🏆 Dr. Terry Hunt (DVM’74) received the CVMA Distinguished Member Award, recognizing significant contributions to the veterinary profession and dedicated service to the association.

🏆 Dr. Wayne Burwash (DVM’69) received the CVMA Humane Award, which honours veterinarians who have made outstanding contributions to animal welfare and well-being.

🏆 Kasey Keohane (DVM’27) received the R.V.L. Walker Award, recognizing exceptional leadership and commitment among veterinary students serving on the CVMA Council.

🏆 Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic received the CVMA Practice of the Year Award, recognizing a clinic's outstanding achievements in veterinary service and community engagement. The clinic is owned by three WCVM alumni: Dr. Mike Ross (DVM’00), Dr. Zoe Ross (DVM’03) and Dr. Christa Harder (DVM’09).
