This week we welcomed students into a new academic year with orientation at the Saskatoon Theological Union.

Part of the day was practical: helping students understand the rhythms, expectations, resources, and supports that will help them thrive.

But orientation is also about community.

So we spent time with a few simple questions:

Who are you?
Where are you?
Why are you here?
What do you want this community to know about you?

Those questions helped us begin the year by learning a little more about one another: where we come from, what has brought us to theological study, and what we hope to find here.

“When you want to grow others, ensure you grow yourself,” reflects Dr. Richard Manley-Tannis.

Over the past several weeks, Richard has been participating in Phase 2 of the Canadian Armed Forces Chaplain Basic Qualification Course.

The course has invited him to think more deeply about leadership, spiritual care, ethics, counselling, and the importance of an active chaplain presence. His training has included trauma-informed care, PTSD and Operational Stress Injuries, moral injury, grief, crisis response, active listening, professional boundaries, and the role chaplains can play in supporting military members and their families.

“Chaplains are not therapists, but trusted companions who create space for healing, understanding, and connection,” Richard explains.

The course has also reinforced the importance of self-awareness: understanding our own strengths, limitations, and blind spots, while knowing when to refer someone to other forms of care.

For Richard, these lessons reach beyond military chaplaincy. Institutions are ultimately about people, and trust, compassion, humility, and lifelong learning remain at the heart of effective leadership and ministry.

What makes a good sabbatical?

Rev. Dr. Becca Whitla has been spending part of her sabbatical with The Slow Professor: Challenging the Culture of Speed in the Academy, by Maggie Berg and Barbara K. Seeber, a book recommended by LTS colleague Rev. Dr. Kayko Driedger Hesslein.

The authors challenge the pressure toward constant productivity in higher education, making the case for collaborative teaching, thoughtful research, and scholarship that values depth over speed.

"For me, it has been an invitation to pause, reflect, and discern the spaces and edges that need to be explored more deeply in my work," says Professor Whitla.

At St. Andrew’s College, scholarship is about making space for better questions, careful listening, and work that matters to the church and the world.

Rev. Dr. OhWang Kwon, our incoming McDougald Professor of Theological Ethics, recently shared one of the books that has shaped his thinking:

This graduation photograph of Rev. Ray Purdie hangs at St. Andrew’s College, a reminder of his place in the life and history of the College.

St. Andrew’s joins the wider church in mourning Ray’s death on July 11, 2026, at the age of 80.

A graduate of St. Andrew’s College and a member of the ordination class of 1988, Ray offered a lifetime of faithful ministry across Living Skies Regional Council. He served communities of faith in Bradwell-Lost River, Spiritwood, Glaslyn, Shell Lake, Lanigan-Nokomis, and most recently St. Andrew’s United Church in Imperial. He also spent a significant part of his ministry as chaplain at Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon.

We extend our condolences to his spouse, Judie, their children and grandchildren, and all those whose lives were touched by Ray’s ministry and friendship.

A memorial service will be held at The Williston Harbour Landing in Regina on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Service details and livestream registration are available through Speers Funeral and Cremation Services:

A sabbatical is often imagined as a time of rest. For Rev. Dr. Becca Whitla, it has been a season of renewed focus, deeper research, and sustained writing.

“My sabbatical has been a time to deepen ministry experience and dive deeply into research and writing,” she shares.

Dr. Whitla is currently contributing to three co-edited volumes exploring practical theology, congregational singing in Canada, and the decolonization of congregational singing from global perspectives. She is also preparing three articles on liturgy and practical theology.

“While there is time for some recuperation from a busy life, a sabbatical is more of a shifting of emphasis, like the saying, ‘A change is as good as a rest.’”

This fall, Dr. Whitla is looking forward to dedicating further time to her own research agenda. We are grateful for the scholarship, collaboration, and theological reflection she continues to offer the church and the wider academic community.

St. Andrew’s College is delighted to announce the appointment of Rev. Dr. OhWang Kwon as the McDougald Professor of Theological Ethics, beginning in Fall 2026.

Rev. Dr. Kwon brings extensive pastoral, theological, and intercultural experience to the role. His scholarship explores theological ethics through questions of justice, citizenship, solidarity, intercultural ministry, and ecumenism.

“I hope to be a theological bridge that humbly connects diverse theological traditions and practices in various contexts, including the Canadian Prairies.”
