Introducing Anukul Basnet!

Anukul Basnet is an M.Sc. student in Civil Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan and an Irrigation Engineer with the Engineering Services Unit, Government of Saskatchewan. His research focuses on modelling year-round soil-water processes and their effects on crop yield under a changing climate.

Meet Hamed, whose research focuses on understanding the interactions between freeze–thaw processes, soil salinity, and crop productivity, and their impacts on hydrological processes in cold regions through numerical modelling.

By integrating field experiments with the development of numerical solutions under real-world conditions, Hamed’s research advances our scientific understanding of Prairie hydrology and enhances our ability to predict how changing environmental conditions affect water movement, soil health, and agricultural sustainability. 🌎💧🌱

Meet Arezou, a Master’s student in Water Security at the School of Environment and Sustainability. Her research focuses on evaluating the hydrological performance of green roof systems using HYDRUS.
By simulating rainfall–runoff responses and internal water mixing dynamics for pilot-scale green roofs at the Multi-Purpose Slope Testing Facility at the University of Saskatchewan, Arezou investigates how green roof systems retain rainfall, regulate runoff generation, and influence water movement under different conditions. 🌎💧💧

Meet Alana, whose research focuses on improving our understanding of permafrost hydrology and permafrost thaw in the Taiga Shield near Yellowknife. Using field observations and numerical modelling, Alana investigates the factors that influence ground thaw and explores how climate change may accelerate permafrost degradation.
Her work helps advance our understanding of how northern ecosystems may respond to a warming climate, with a particular focus on the impacts of permafrost thaw on hydrological cycling and nutrient export in permafrost watersheds. 🌎❄️💧💧

💧 Our Python programming class was a great opportunity to explore the world of coding. Participants learned the fundamentals of Python programming, practiced general coding statements, and discovered how to work with different libraries commonly used in research and data analysis. 💻💧
From writing simple programs to understanding how coding can support scientific and research applications, the session created an interactive and engaging learning environment for students and young researchers alike. It was wonderful to see everyone collaborating, asking questions, and building new technical skills together. 💧

💧 Our bowling event was all about good vibes, great company, and a little bit of competition. It was amazing to see students and young researchers come together, relax, enjoy some delicious pizza, and take a fun, refreshing break.💧

💧💧 We’re excited to continue sharing the inspiring stories within our community! 🌿💧
Meet Sam Lucy Behle, a PhD student with the Research Group in Ecology of the MRC-Abitibi (GREMA) at the Forest Research Institute, University of Quebec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and a visiting student at the Global Institute for Water Security.
Her research investigates the spread of Bythotrephes cederströmii, an invasive predatory zooplankton in Canadian lakes. She examines how environmental and human factors drive its expansion and how it alters lake food webs using community analysis and stable isotope methods.
Sam’s work aims to improve predictions of invasive species spread and support better freshwater ecosystem management. 🌊💧💧
