We are an international boarding high-school specializing in sustainability and the environment. We have a simple goal, we want to change the world.

What Makes Praxis International Institute different? To start, we “think” differently. We recognize that not all students learn in the same way. Just as we have different senses for taking information in about the outside world, people have different m**hods for taking information in that they need to learn. There are many different learning styles and we believe we need to be supportive of them.

Here’s a review of how #dopamine plays a role in our lives in the form of reward and behavior. #Social Media:
- Triggers frequent, quick hits of dopamine through likes, comments, notifications, etc.
- Exploits the brain’s reward pathways in a manner similar to addictive drugs.
- Provides an endless stream of novel stimuli, which keeps triggering dopamine release.
- Can lead to dopamine dysregulation over time, reducing sensitivity to natural rewards.
- The smartphone acts as a “modern-day hypodermic needle” for delivering digital dopamine.
Compared to other sources of dopamine:
#Drug Addiction:
- Causes an intense, artificial surge in dopamine far beyond natural rewards
- Social media apps can trigger dopamine release “just like he**in, or m**h, or alcohol”.
Food Addiction:
- Highly palatable foods can trigger dopamine release similar to drugs, though not as intensely
- Like social media, can lead to compulsive behavior and reduced sensitivity over time
#Exercise:
- Produces a more moderate, sustainable increase in dopamine
- Can help restore healthy dopamine function, unlike the dysregulation from social media.
#Daily Activities:
- Normal pleasurable activities cause moderate dopamine release
- Don’t typically lead to the intense spikes or long-term changes seen with social media addiction.
In summary, social media appears to be more similar to drug addiction in its dopamine effects than to exercise or normal daily activities. It exploits the brain’s reward system to create frequent, intense dopamine spikes that can lead to compulsive use and dysregulation over time. The constant novelty and immediate rewards provided by social media make it particularly potent in triggering dopamine release compared to more natural sources. 09/07/2024

So... is school just another cage for our children?
(I'm just sayin...)

Mastery is also the model that is used in such things as driver ed, martial arts, apprenticeship programs, almost all vocational training programs, and just about every kind of training past academia. My question then is, if public education is suppose to prepare you for the future, why doesn't it use the model of education that your future will use?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

"As Ken Robinson has described, the industrial model of education is a form of social engineering that has created many problems in our world. It assumes that learning can be measured by standardized tests, and that all children will learn at the same rate and in the same manner. This is just not true... Fortunately, alongside the factory model a very different educational paradigm has also co-existed. This is sometimes called learner-centered education, or the mastery model. Maria Montessori‘s schools were set up this way, beginning with the understanding that learning requires creativity, freedom and self-direction, and that the happiness of the child is a sign that education is effective."

Educational Malpractice – The Child Manufacturing Process

From John Taylor Gatto, concerning the origins of factory model schooling, and it's true purpose…

"From the beginning, there was purpose behind forced schooling, purpose which had nothing to do with what parents, kids, or communities wanted. Instead, it was forged out of what a highly centralized corporate economy and system of finance bent on internationalizing itself was thought to need; that, and what a strong, centralized political State needed, too.

At first, the primary target was the tradition of independent livelihoods in America. Unless Yankee entrepreneurialism could be put to death, at least among the common population, the immense capital investments that mass production industry required for equipment weren't conceivably justifiable.

Students were to learn to think of themselves as employees competing for the favor of management. Not as Franklin or Edison had once regarded themselves, as self-determined, free agents.

Only by a massive psychological campaign could the menace of overproduction in America be contained. That's what important men and academics called it. The ability of Americans to think as independent producers had to be curtailed."

It helps when the director of the school is himself dyslexic and ADHD, but grew up in a system that did NOT believe the statement below. You can pretty much believe that learning ALWAYS makes accommodations for individual learning styles as a matter of habit. It's what happens when you take the stance that dyslexia and ADHD etc. are not learning disabilities, they are instead teaching disabilities in most main-stream educational institutions.

The power behind this statement 🙌🏼
