Welcoming September
Welcoming September with presence, giving myself permission to slow down and rest when my body asks for it. This can be a hectic time of year.
Children are heading back to school, and many of us are settling back into familiar work schedules and home routines. As the seasons shift, yoga invites us to move through these transitions with awareness and intention.
In Ayurvedic philosophy, autumn is associated with the Vata dosha. Vata energy is characterized by movement, change, and unpredictability, and during this season many people may notice increased feelings of restlessness, anxiety, or overwhelm. One of the greatest gifts we can offer ourselves is awareness—taking moments throughout the day to pause, breathe, and reconnect.
This month's featured breathing practice is Nadi Shodhana, or Alternate Nostril Breathing. This simple pranayama practice can help cultivate balance, focus, and a sense of calm.
Beginner Nadi Shodhana Practice
1. Find a comfortable seated position and lengthen your spine.
2. Gently close your eyes and take a slow breath out through your nose.
3. Using your right thumb, close your right nostril and breathe in and out through the left nostril for five breaths.
4. Then use your ring finger and pinky finger to close the left nostril and breathe in and out through the right nostril for five breaths.
5. Release both nostrils and take five slow breaths through your nose.
This is a simple beginner's approach to the practice. There is no need to worry about matching the length of your inhales and exhales just yet—balance and rhythm develop naturally with time and practice.
Before returning to your daily tasks, consider taking a moment to rest in Child's Pose or lying comfortably on your back. Allow yourself a few extra breaths to absorb the benefits of the practice.
