Dr. Keisha Jefferies: Advancing Black Antiracism in Nursing
📚 Dr. Keisha Jefferies is a leading voice in nursing and Black antiracism research. As a scholar, advocate, and registered nurse, her work focuses on addressing systemic racism in healthcare, amplifying Black nurses’ voices, and promoting equity in nursing leadership.

Honouring Bernice Redmon, RN: A Trailblazer in Canadian Nursing
🚨 Did you know? In 1945, Bernice Redmon, RN became the first Black nurse to practice in Canada—but her journey was anything but easy.
❌ Denied entry into Canadian nursing schools due to racial discrimination, she pursued her nursing education in the U.S. before returning to Canada, where she shattered barriers in healthcare.
âś… She later worked with Health Canada and the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), advocating for equitable healthcare and paving the way for future Black nurses.
Bernice Redmon’s resilience and determination remind us why representation in healthcare matters. Her legacy continues to inspire nurses and healthcare professionals working toward a more inclusive and equitable system.

Celebrating Dr. Eugenia Duodu: Champion for Black Youth in STEM
🔬 Representation in STEM starts early!
Dr. Eugenia Duodu is breaking barriers as a chemist and the CEO of Visions of Science, an organization dedicated to empowering Black and underrepresented youth in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Through mentorship, education, and advocacy, she is ensuring that young people have the tools and opportunities to pursue careers in STEM and healthcare.
✅ She’s inspiring the next generation of Black scientists and healthcare leaders.
✅ She’s proving that diversity in science leads to better healthcare solutions.
✅ She’s bridging the gap in access to STEM education.

Dr. Malinda S. Smith is a trailblazer in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within Canadian academia. As a professor and the inaugural Vice-Provost of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Calgary, she has played a pivotal role in shaping policies that foster greater representation and belonging in higher education.
Her research and advocacy focus on systemic barriers in education, racial and gender equity, and inclusive policy development. Through her leadership, she continues to challenge institutions to move beyond words and take meaningful action toward equity.
This Black History Month, we recognize Dr. Smith’s contributions to building a more just and inclusive academic landscape. Her work reminds us that true progress requires commitment, courage, and continuous learning.

Dr. June Marion James made history as Manitoba’s first Black female physician, breaking barriers in medicine and paving the way for future generations. A leader in pediatric care, allergy and asthma research, and community health advocacy, she has dedicated her career to improving healthcare accessibility and mentoring future medical professionals.
Her legacy highlights the importance of diversity in medicine and the need for equitable representation in healthcare leadership. Let’s honour her contributions and continue striving for a more inclusive future!
