4 Seasons Play: Spring Edition
Spring in Saskatchewan has given us a little bit of everything lately — warm sunshine, muddy puddles, chilly rain, and even a surprise snowfall after a few weeks of summer-like weather. No matter what the weather brings, the children continue to find joy, wonder, and meaningful learning opportunities outdoors.
During the sunny and dry days, the children explored the playground by building obstacle courses, racing trucks and cars down ramps and slides, balancing and climbing, digging in the sand, and engaging in imaginative outdoor play. The outdoor environment became a space for collaboration, creativity, movement, and problem-solving as children tested ideas, created games together, and explored how things move and work.
Then came the rain- and with it, a whole new kind of exploration. While adults may see muddy boots and wet rain suits, the children saw endless opportunities for play, exploration, and discovery. On these rainy days, the children spent time jumping in puddles, digging trenches with sticks, scooping and pouring muddy water, creating “recipes” with mud, exploring how water moves through the playground, and working together to investigate the changes the rain brought to our outdoor environment. Some children noticed the ripples in the puddles as they stomped; others experimented with filling buckets and containers, and many used their imaginations to transform the muddy spaces into kitchens, making food like birthday cakes and sushi, construction sites, and sensory experiences with mud and worms.
Outdoor play in all weather supports so many areas of children’s development. Through these experiences, children build problem-solving skills, creativity, resilience, coordination, confidence, social connections, and a deeper relationship with the natural world. Sensory-rich experiences such as mud and puddle play also encourage children to explore with all of their senses, ask questions, test ideas, and learn through hands-on discovery.
At our learning centre, we believe children benefit from experiencing the seasons authentically- even when spring in Saskatchewan is messy, chilly, and unpredictable. Sometimes that means extra laundry and muddy clothes, but it also means meaningful learning, joyful memories, and the freedom for children to simply be children. 🤍
Thank you for continuing to support outdoor play by sending your children dressed for the weather and ready for adventure!
