It's an important skill for everyone to have, and it's especially important for building and maintaining healthy relationships.
The ๐๐๐๐ mnemonic is a helpful way to remember the key skills for building and maintaining relationships:
๐entle: Be kind and respectful to the other person. Avoid using threats or making judgments. Be aware of your tone of voice.
๐nterested: Listen actively and show that you're interested in what the other person has to say. Don't interrupt or talk over them.
๐alidate: Show that you understand the other person's feelings and opinions. Be non-judgmental. For example, you could say, "I can understand how you feel frustrated."
๐asy: Smile, use humor, and use non-threatening body language.
Validating another person is especially important in building healthy relationships. It shows the other person that you care about their feelings and that you respect their perspective.
Here are a few tips for validating someone:
This means paying attention to what the other person is saying, both verbally and nonverbally. Make eye contact, nod your head, and ask follow-up questions.
This shows the other person that you've been listening and that you understand their perspective. For example, you could say, "So, what you're saying is that you're feeling frustrated because your boss didn't give you credit for your work."
It's okay to say, "I understand that you're feeling frustrated, angry, sad, etc." This shows the other person that you're there for them and that you support them.
The goal of validation is to show the other person that you understand and care about them, not to fix their problem.

Wisdom Wednesday: let students inspire YOU โจ
On this Wisdom Wednesday, we're turning the spotlight on our incredible students. Here's what we are sharing on behalf of a student today ๐
Words have the power to influence and shape self-esteem and beliefs. Positive encouragement boosts confidence and nurtures self-worth, empowering teens to pursue goals. Negative words can inflict lasting damage, leading to self-doubt and emotional distress. Choose your words carefully. They matter.
Let's remember the incredible impact of our words, and always choose kindness. Together, we can uplift and inspire the next generation!

Every year, on September 10th, the world comes together to raise awareness about su***de prevention. At DBT in Schools, we believe that fostering a safe and supportive environment for our youth is essential.
Did you know that su***de is one of the leading causes of death among young people? This is a serious issue that requires our attention. Let's work hand in hand to create open conversations around mental health and provide the necessary tools for our youth to cope with challenges.
Our focus on youth mental health has led us to develop the DBT Steps-A skills training and social-emotional problem-solving curriculum. By equipping adolescents with essential skills, we can help them navigate their emotions, build resilience, and face life's ups and downs.
Opening up about mental health is the first step towards breaking the stigma. Reach out to your friends, family, or classmates and check in on them. A simple "How are you feeling today?" can make a huge difference.
Let's support one another and create an environment where asking for help is a sign of strength. Spread awareness, share resources, and be a source of comfort for those who may be struggling.
On this World Su***de Prevention Day, let's commit to learning more about youth mental health, understanding the signs of distress, and offering a listening ear to those in need.
