In 2019, I travelled to China with an iPad mini, a camera, and a lot of hope. My internet access was unreliable. My usual apps did not work. My GPS was inconsistent. I could not assume I could call or message home. But I had my family tree with me. I share that story and the lessons learned in my upcoming webinar, Your Family Tree, Everywhere: Mac and iOS Genealogy Solutions. Released June 2 on Family Tree Webinars. Register to receive access during the free 7-day viewing period.

Every family has one. The person everyone turns to when someone asks:
“Who is this in the photo?” “How are we related?” “When was Grandma born?”
In my upcoming webinar, Your Family Tree, Everywhere: Mac and iOS Genealogy Solutions, I talk about how your iPhone or iPad can become a small genealogy field kit when family history suddenly appears at the dinner table. The webinar releases June 2 on Legacy Family Tree Webinars. Registrants can watch free for 7 days after release.

Genealogy happens at home. It also happens at family dinners, in archives, in cemeteries, while travelling, and in those unexpected moments when someone suddenly asks, “Who was that cousin again?”
My new webinar, Your Family Tree, Everywhere: Mac and iOS Genealogy Solutions, will be released on June 2 through Legacy Family Tree Webinars. This talk is for genealogists who use Apple devices and want practical, real-world ways to make those devices support their research — without needing to become “techie.” We’ll look at simple workflows for using your iPhone, iPad, and Mac at the family dinner table, in the archive, and on genealogy travel.

As this month moves to a close, I have been thinking about how much Chinese Canadian history survives in scattered and sometimes difficult forms. And yet, it does survive: in records, in photographs, in family papers, in communities, in names, and in the persistence of people who ask questions. What matters is the willingness to learn how to read the past with care and context, especially where earlier systems obscured more than they revealed. Thank you for joining me in this series.

Tonight, 7 pm Pacific. This is your chance to catch my talk about the story of Commando Bay, on Okanagan Lake, BC, a story so hidden even the locals had no idea. Sponsored by the Chinese Canadian Military Museum Society and ANAVETS Pacific Unit 280, this is a story grounded in records found only at the National Archives, London, about a real life spy camp and the original thirteen who volunteered despite everything.
