Please join the CECE as they present an overview of the Professional Advisory: Practices that Harm Children

Participants will deepen their understanding of the responsibilities of Registered Early Childhood Educators regarding the well-being and safety of children. The session explores the use of professional judgment, and the importance of reflecting on personal beliefs and biases, which can influence practices that may harm children. Reporting obligations, accountability, and the role of leadership in supporting policy, practice and positive workplace cultures will be outlined. Opportunities for critical reflection and meaningful dialogue are available to support application to practice.

Intended audience: All RECEs, ECAs, Child Care Supervisors/Directors/Managers, Employers, ECE Postsecondary Faculty and ECE Students

Deborah Gores RECE is a Professional Practice Analyst at the College of Early Childhood Educators. She holds a Master of Science in Family Relations and Human Development from the University of Guelph, where her research focused on supporting RECEs in addressing the development of sexuality in early childhood. Her current research interests are early childhood education policy and sexuality education in early childhood. Prior to joining the College, Deborah worked in the research and evaluation department at the Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre.

Melinda Bruce RECE is a Professional Practice Analyst at the College of Early Childhood Educators. She holds a Master of Arts in Early Childhood Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University. Prior to joining the College, Melinda worked in licensed childcare and more recently, served as the Policy Manager for the Educators Matter: Workforce Policy for Quality Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) project at Child Care Now. Melinda is passionate about ELCC system building, research, and policy development. As part of her professional learning, she is examining mentorship, ethical and professional standards, and competencies through a feminist care ethics lens.

Her work spans nationally funded projects and international collaborations examining physical literacy, outdoor and active play, and educator professional learning. Recent contributions include q***r theory in ECE, trauma-informed school-based active play, and innovative approaches to AI assessment in higher education.
