Our amazing teachers will use research-based methods to first assess your child’s reading ability, and then they will choose a book that is both appropriate for their reading level AND caters to their general interests. Most importantly, your child’s Buddy will prepare dynamic and engaging activities along the way and help them set reading goals.

📚J’s Book Buddy Sessions:

J has been working with her LLC tutor all summer. A reading assessment helped J’s Buddy choose a perfect fit book for her. Since then, they have dived into magical worlds filled with underwater adventures, trips to outer space, and most recently, a superhero squirrel!! J and her Buddy are now finishing their third book together, which is a considerable feat because these are her first English chapter books! J's Buddy has also adapted lessons to include the practise of important writing structures like verb tenses. Want to take a look into what one of our sessions looks like? Book Review! 📚

Title: Wonder
Author: R.J. Palacio

Auggie has been different all his life. Although inside, he is a regular and brilliant boy who loves Star Wars and science, he is different from every other child he knows. He was born with Treacher Collins syndrome that was made even more complicated by an additional syndrome. As a result, he has undergone dozens of surgeries and was homeschooled his entire life. This year, he begins his first year in public school. This story chronicles Auggie’s emotional start at Beecher Prep, his struggle to make and maintain friendships, and the highs and lows between him and his family members.

This book is brilliant. This story is filled with beautiful and necessary lessons and a storyline that will hook the reader on the first page; the almost poetic and flow of this author’s writing makes it a masterpiece. A book like this risks many stereotypes and overly exaggerated moments of vulnerability, but Wonder has none of these. It is raw, and its characters are well-balanced and a mix of endearing and complex. Acceptance is at the core of this story. Usually, we would take the time to recommend books to children with specific interests, but this book we want to recommend to everyone. Whether you are a teacher, a parent, or a child yourself, this book is a MUST read.

⭐ Teacher Spotlight: Meet Lydia, our resident math teacher!

Hi everyone! My name is Lydia and I am a math teacher at L'Académie Les Copilotes. I am in my fourth year of the Early Childhood and Elementary Education program at Concordia University. For the last 12 years, I have been a private music instructor for students of all ages. I am also a research assistant at Concordia, and I work with Masters students on their math theses. I am a huge bookworm, and recently, I have been running book clubs with small groups of elementary school students. I am also an animal lover, and I can promise you that my cat Mingus will probably make an appearance during our lessons at one point or another. As a math nerd, I believe that every student can love math if they are given the proper background knowledge to support their learning. Looking forward to meeting you!

Book Review! 📚

George has a secret. She was born a boy but identifies as a girl. This year, her class is putting on the famous play Charlotte’s Web. George believes that she is perfect for playing the lead role, but there is a big problem. The starring role is Charlotte, and Charlotte is a girl. Luckily, George has a supportive best friend named Kelly, who hatches a plan and encourages George to become the most authentic version of herself. Throughout the story, George deals with her truth and what that means for her relationships and future.

There are very few LGBTQ+ children’s books available. Not only is this one accessible and essential to read, but it also opens doors for conversation about the theme of feeling different. Even children who are not experiencing the same thing as George will relate to the story, which can instill empathy and connectedness to the character’s struggles. The book also highlights friendship and celebrates acceptance. George will make a great addition to your library!! 🌈

Teacher Spotlight: Meet one of our Book Buddies! ⭐️

Hello everyone, my name is Misha and I am a Book Buddy at LLC. I am currently starting my third year in the Early Childhood and Elementary Education program at Concordia University, and I have a background working as an Early Childhood Educator. In my experience, I have learned that with a bit of guidance, support, and encouragement, children can conquer any obstacle that is in front of them. I also love language, so I have been taking extra courses at school and working towards a career in speech language pathology. If your child is in need of extra support for pronunciation and reading tools, I am here for you! Books are a great way to explore and learn about the world around us and connect to people. My goal is to get children to read for pleasure and to make learning fun and exciting, one book at a time.

He is trapped in his world on the ground now, fearful that he will never be able to experience the wind and the birds high up in the sky again. That is, until one day he throws a paper plane and the wind takes it up, far up above his head.

Calling all pre-school children! We have something magical for you. This story is a beautiful rendition of the original nursery rhyme, and takes Humpty Dumpty to a world that will surprise you, make you cry, and have you celebrating all in just 36 pages. To say that this is a MUST read would be an understatement. The illustrations are marvellous and the author’s writing is almost poetic. You and your child/classroom will fall in love with Humpty’s redemption, we promise!

‼ BOOK BUDDY SESSION #2 BEGINS JULY 18TH ‼

Our summer Book Buddy Program is currently in full swing! There are so many fun things about this program, but the most popular comment that we have received is how much of a difference it makes when a child is matched with a “perfect fit” book. Not only is it important to provide a child with a book that interests them, but it is also imperative that they are able to read that book with confidence. 🤩

We are about halfway through our first session, and have VERY limited spots for session 2! If you are looking for some reading support for your child, this program is the perfect fit. Our teachers will provide your child with a full reading assessment, and each week your child will also receive reading aid, and take part in fun activities that build reading comprehension skills.

Book Review! 📚

Title: Mac B Kid Spy: Mac Undercover
Author: Mac Barnett

Take a trip to the 1980s with Mac, who is just an ordinary kid. He loves his Gameboy and has a specific distaste for his mom’s annoying boyfriend Craig. He is also a spy. Yes, you read that right! Mac has been hired by the Queen of England to go undercover. Someone has stolen the Queen’s Crown jewels. No one is as qualified as Mac to solve the case! Along with his canine friend Freddie, Mac will travel to England to catch the bandit and encounter twists and turns along the way.

This is the perfect book for kids looking to fall into a good series. It’s mysterious and fun and has just the right amount of sarcasm. Mac is very relatable despite being a spy, and his banter with the Queen is absolutely hilarious. We also love how the author sprinkles tons of facts throughout the book while telling his readers to “look it up.” Young readers will love the illustrations and have a lot to talk about after reading Mac B. If your child reads this, you have to make sure to have the second book ready because you will probably find them going through the entire series!
