When I meet virtually with potential students, the following question often comes up...
"How often should I practice?"
And they're usually surprised when I say "...around 10 minutes a day."
Okay, let me explain this a little more. Ideally, we would all have the time to practice the guitar for an hour or two every day, but let's be real, life is a thing. For me it's not about how long you practice for, but what it is you practice when you do pick up the guitar.
Let's say you grab your guitar and commit to an hour of practice...but most of that is you looking for chords, entering a YouTube rabbit hole, finding the best backing track etc. Well it will quickly be that you haven't played much guitar at all. That's why I recommend creating a 'Guitar Resources' folder on your computer. Copying your favourite YouTube links, chord charts, strumming patterns into that folder will give you all that you need in a quick and accessible way.
Now, don't get me wrong, there is no problem with playing for more than 10 minutes a day, but just make sure you are staying on top of the material you can't play as much as the stuff you can play. I will just add that the 'little and often' approach really works because of the 'often' part. You need to be playing minimum 10 minutes a day...everyday!
Creating playlists on YouTube of the songs you are learning is also another good way to have your repertoire ready to play through when inspiration hits 🙌🏻
