The CHPI was created to bring groups of scientists together to form new research and training synergies in areas of importance for Quebec. DUE TO LACK OF FUNDING, THIS ORGANIZATION IS NO LONGER ACTIVE**

The thrust of the Centre’s research is to understand how parasites and hosts interact in order to provide basic knowledge for the

design of better vaccines or drugs to control parasitic diseases and to develop new methods to improve diagnosis of infection. The two major unifying reserch themes or axes of the Centre are to conduct leading edge research on parasitic diseases by studying:

1- the mechanisms of pathogenesis and host defense;
2- the molecular basis of drug resistance and drug target discovery. The Centre also conducts research in a number of other areas including epidemiology and development of improved methods for diagnosis. The major aims of the Centre are to:

- conduct research to understand the host-parasite relationship at the molecular level with the aim of developing new therapies and diagnostic tests;
- train highly qualified personnel at the MSc/ PhD/Postdoctoral level;
- provide opportunities for cross-Centre collaborations;
- promote Quebec science through trainee presentations at national/international conferences;
- provide opportunities for trainees and members to interact with leading scientists through invitations to our annual meeting. The added value associated with a critical mass is that Centre members are positioned to facilitate each other’s research, accelerating technical advances and training of HQP since skills are readily available in a supportive environment. Centre researchers have a diversity of expertise in parasitology, genomics, proteomics, molecular biology, cell biology, molecular genetics, membrane protein chemistry, immunology, neurobiology, molecular diagnostics, veterinary medicine, ecology, nutrition and epidemiology. These skills are applied to the study of the host-parasite relationship at several levels of understanding:

- the molecular interactions between host and parasite;
- the mechanisms of parasite invasion;
gene expression and immunosuppression;
- the mechanisms of parasite drug resistance;
- the mechanisms of immunological resistance expressed by the host;
- the nutrition-infection interface;
- the diagnosis of parasite infection;
- the epidemiology of parasitic infections. This complementarity of expertise enhances our research and provides a rich training environment for HQP.

Dr. Martin Olivier (McGill University) and other researchers have organized a one-week course on immunology, diagnosis and treatment of Leishmaniosis, Schistosomiasis and helminth infections for spring 2017 at the University of Gondar, Ethiopia.

Application to this training is restricted to applicants from Africa - details of the eligibility and application procedure is provided on the link below.
