Play is one of the most important ways young children learn. Building, pretending, sorting, creating and experimenting all give children opportunities to practise language, problem-solving, coordination and social skills.

What looks like “just playing” can involve a great deal of thinking, planning and learning. ❤️

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

Today, we took the time to remember and honour the children and families who were impacted by Canada’s residential school system, and to recognize the lasting impact it continues to have on Indigenous communities.

At our childcare centre, we believe that reconciliation begins with learning, listening, and understanding. Even with young children, we can begin to introduce ideas of kindness, respect, inclusion, and caring for one another in meaningful and age-appropriate ways.

The infant staff at Assumption are bringing stories to life by thoughtfully incorporating books into their program. Rather than simply having a bin full of books, they are giving each story meaning and creating opportunities for the children to explore and learn.

They read and enjoy the books together, reinforcing the stories with real objects and materials the children will see throughout the books. This gives the children opportunities to build their vocabulary, practice object recognition, explore different sounds, smells, and textures, and use their imaginations.

It all looks so inviting and engaging! You can really see how much thought and creativity the staff have put into creating meaningful learning experiences for the children.

🚲 Bring Your Own Bike Day! 🚲

The toddlers and preschoolers at Assumption enjoyed a fun-filled morning of showing off their bikes, tricycles, and scooters from home! Bring Your Own Bike Day was a wonderful opportunity for the children to bring their wheels from home, explore riding them, and share the experience with one another.

The preschoolers took full advantage of the school tarmac, riding up and down the gentle hill and making the most of the large open space before school is back in session next week. Meanwhile, our toddlers enjoyed exploring the preschool yard on their bikes, building confidence and developing their riding skills.

There was so much learning happening through this simple, joyful experience! The children were strengthening their gross motor skills, spatial awareness, problem-solving abilities, balance, coordination, and confidence, while also engaging in meaningful opportunities for social interaction, sharing, and risky play.

It was a morning filled with movement, exploration, and lots of fun on wheels! 🛴🚲💛

Role: Centre Administrator, RECE HBCEL

Q: What’s your favorite part of working with kids (even from behind the desk)?
A:One of my favourite parts of working with children is creating meaningful connections. I love when children pop into my office just to say hello or come looking for a little hug. Those moments remind me of the impact I can have, even when I’m not in the classroom all day long. I love seeing their smiles, watching them explore, and witnessing their curiosity and wonder as they discover the world around them.
Q: What’s a fun fact about you that the kids might love to know?
A: I’m a HUGE Disney fan! I have multiple Disney tattoos and I’ll happily admit that I still love watching classic Disney movies—especially when I’m home sick and need a little comfort!
Q: If our office had a mascot, what would it be?
A: I already have one! I have a little turtle on my desk named Toby Turtle. He’s actually a tape dispenser, but he has an official title: Director of Adhesive Affairs. I’ve even offered him a name tag so everyone knows how important he is.
Q: If you could bring one fictional character to the centre for a day, who would it be?
A: Mickey Mouse, of course! I’m a Disney fan, so getting to bring Mickey to the Centre for a day would be pretty magical. I’m sure the children would have a million questions for him!
Q: What’s your favourite kids’ activity to watch or be part of at the centre?
A: I’m a huge fan of outdoor exploration. I love watching children discover the natural world around them. Sometimes it’s something as simple as an ant crawling through the dirt. Suddenly, everyone is watching, wondering where it’s going, what it’s doing, and where it came from. Seeing that excitement and wonder over something so small is one of my favourite things. Those moments remind me just how amazing the world can be when we slow down and look at it through a child’s eyes.

A Visit from the Aylmer Fire Department 🚒💦

Last Thursday, the children at our Assumption Centre in Aylmer had a very exciting visit from the Aylmer Fire Department! 🚒

The children erupted with curiosity and excitement, followed by lots of waving, enthusiastic “Hi!” greetings, high fives, and fist bumps. Each class had the opportunity to take a tour around the fire truck and explore the hoses, water taps, uniforms, helmets, and all of the other equipment stored in the truck’s compartments.

Some children even had the chance to sit in the driver and passenger seats, while a few lucky children got to blow the horn! 📣

Once everyone had their turn to explore, the children eagerly waited for the water fun to commence! 💦 What a fun way to learn about fire trucks and the important work of our firefighters while cooling off in the warm weather.

A huge thank you to the Aylmer Fire Department for taking time out of your busy days to visit with us, teach the children, and make their day so memorable! We are so grateful for the opportunity to help our children learn more about the people in our community who work hard to keep us safe. ❤️🚒
