Women have been a minority in STEM for as long as the fields have been around. Luckily, the representation gap is shrinking, with more and more girls entering science, technology, engineering and maths as a result of cultural shifts and the growing number of amazing female role models they can identify with and aspire to follow!
Thank you to the strong, intelligent trailblazers who are inspiring girls to unlock their potential in STEM!

If you know a 16-17 year old girl who loves science and mountains, tell her about this amazing program!
If you know an adventurous, science-loving teenage Mighty Girl looking for a challenge this year, Inspiring Girls Expeditions is currently accepting applications for their free wilderness expedition science program, Girls on Ice! This year, the organization is running its annual 12-day expeditions to Alaska and Washington state, and repeating two expeditions introduced last year -- one in the Swiss Alps and a sea kayak expedition in Alaskan fjords. They have also added two brand new expeditions: Girls On Rock in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and Girls On Ice Canada in British Columbia. On each trip, a small team of girls will spend 9 to 12 days exploring and learning about mountain glaciers and the alpine landscape through scientific field studies with professional glaciologists, ecologists, mountain guides, and artists.
The program, offered in partnership with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is free of cost and open to girls who are 16 or 17 years old on June 1, 2018. Three of the US expeditions are open to girls from the US, Canada, Mexico, and non-high income countries: Girls on Ice Cascades, which is focused on exploring an active volcano, Mount Baker, in Washington state; Girls in Icy Fjords, which will explore the Bear Glacier and the surrounding marine environment in Alaska by foot and kayak; and Girls on Rocks, which is focused on exploring the high alpine rocky environment in Colorado. The second Alaska trip, which involves exploring the Gulkana Glacier and the alpine landscape gives preference to girls from Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, the Yukon, or California. The Girls on Ice Switzerland expedition, which is open to girls between 15 and 17 years old, requires German fluency, and the new Girls on Ice Canada program will give preference to Canadian applicants. No prior technical experience or specialized skills are required of participants.
All Girls on Ice programs are tuition free; participants provide transportation to the program site, but Girls on Ice provides as much financial assistance for travel as they can to ensure that every girl can go regardless of economic situation. They also provide all technical equipment and clothing needed for the expedition. The deadline to apply for this unique program is January 19.
To learn more about the application process -- or if you'd like to make a donation so they can continue to provide such innovative programs for teen girls -- visit https://www.inspiringgirls.org/. You can also view photos from prior expeditions on their page at UAF Girls on Ice Program

Climate change has been all over the news, and with good reason. Have you ever wondered about how our perception of the risk climate change poses to the world changes how we act individually and on a societal level? These scientists combined psychology, climate science and mathematical modelling to try to predict more accurately the impact the human-driven climate change will have on the planet and us. Taking knowledge from different disciplines like this is becoming ever more popular and necessary in STEM!
Linking models of human behaviour and climate alters projected climate change
