ARE YOU BEING MANAGED OR LEAD AT WORK?

Becoming a MANAGER means you have shown the potential to LEAD a team. “Manager” is just a title, it means that the person has been given the opportunity to prove that they can “lead” others.

Being a leader means you have earned the respect and demonstrated the vision and values that cause your team to want to follow you by improving their own performance, helping others succeed and thus making YOU successful.

Far too often, in fact usually, people are promoted because they are the top performers in their field. That has no bearing on their leadership skills or potential. Ironically, a top performer is likely not going to be a great leader because they have some natural ability in their field and they won’t necessarily understand the struggles of the low or average performer. A leader uses their talent to leverage the skills of individuals to elevate everyone’s performance and achieve results.

Managers have a binary checklist of metrics and tasks and a uniform performance management system. Management leads to a top-to-bottom stack-ranking of employees and a process to address low performance and reward top performers.

It is much easier for a person with leadership skills to learn to manage people than for a manager to learn to be a good leader.
