This Monday, May 11th: chess is back at the St. Albert Public Library. Open from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Sets and clocks (and optionally scoresheets) provided.
All Ages Chess Drop-in Casual, structured chess for players of all ages and skills. Play some games with other community members, split in two sections for newer and experienced players. Sets and clocks...

Friday puzzle: Magnus Carlsen (White) takes on the youngest ever 2700, Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş (Black).
Black's last move, ...b6-b5, hoped to block out White's bishop from stopping the f-pawn from a6. How can White win anyways?
ANSWER
White starts with 1. g7! to open a new lane for the bishop towards h3. The game continued 1. ...Nxg7 2. axb5 f2 3. Bh3 and White won with the b-pawn.
Importantly, if 2. ...Ne6 White is in time to stop the f-pawn with 3. b6! f2 4. Ba6.

ANSWER
1. Rxh5+! works perfectly. No matter how Black captures, White has mate on the next move: Qh3 #, Qa6 #, or Qf8 #.
