When Learning to play the bass one of the most important things to work on is getting a good sound out the instrument. Keep your right hand relaxed and move consistently from one note to the next. You can use a pick, your fingers or thumb. At the the beginning focus on a good sound and timing.

My recommendation for Thumb Picks

Thumb picks come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Some are good and some really bad.
Over the years I’ve always found 2 styles of thumb picks to be the best choice. The one I’ve been using for the past couple of years is by Black Mountain. It’s very comfortable with a spring loaded thumb band and the pick is very comparable to a Dunlop 1mm. It’s great for fingerstyle, strumming or picking.

Before I found these I was a long time fan of Fred Kelly thumb picks. These are excellent as well, but I find the black mountain picks a little more versatile.

The bad ones: There’s several thumb picks out there. Many have odd shapes and sizes. There are some options available that I actually have no idea why anyone would want. Sometimes they are either too heavy or light and uncomfortable. They either break, your string breaks or you have no circulation in your thumb after a few tunes.

Pick up a few Black Mountain or Fred Kelly and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

A guitar case is a very important piece of gear that all students need. It will protect your instrument from the elements and make it easier to carry. We have two free gig bags available for any current student who may need one. If you need a case, please let us know and you can take one home after your first class next week.

Guitar Tip: play your songs slow at first. You have to get the song in your hands before you can play it fast.

BREAK SONGS INTO SMALL SECTIONS

Learning an entire song can feel overwhelming. Instead, break it down into smaller sections:

🎵 Verse
🎵 Chorus
🎵 Bridge
🎵 Solo

Focus on mastering one section at a time, then put everything together.

You’ll learn faster, stay motivated, and feel more confident as you progress.

Bridge pins hold the ball end of each guitar string securely inside the bridge. They may look small, but they play an important role in keeping your strings properly seated and your guitar playing its best.

Tip: If you lose a bridge pin, make sure you have a few spares.
