When Arashi-Do opened in my hometown, my older brother and I were among its first students. I started training at eight years old under Sensei Mike and Sensei Gary, earning my green belt before financial and time constraints forced us to leave.
A few years later, we returned during my junior high yearsโa time when I needed friends, guidance, and a sense of belonging. Arashi-Do gave me all of that. It became more than a martial arts school; it became a second family, with role models who continue to inspire me today.
As I progressed, I embraced every aspect of training, from competition to teaching. Whether I stood on the podium or was eliminated in the first round, I learned that stepping into the ring is an accomplishment in itself. As a brown belt, I began assisting with classes and grew increasingly involved with the Rocky Arashi-Do community.
At 16, I earned my black belt, and soon after I was leading classes on my own. In June 2000, just before my 18th birthday, I was honoured to become Head Instructor of the Rocky club.
Today, I take pride in giving others what Arashi-Do gave me: confidence, fitness, lifelong friendships, strong role models, a sense of family, and above all, a relentless spirit.
