At 3–4 years old, imaginations are taking off! ✨ Children are becoming more conversational, asking lots of questions, creating exciting pretend-play adventures, and learning how to play alongside—and with—others.

💚 Development Tip: Make time for open-ended play! Cardboard boxes, dress-up clothes, blocks, art supplies, and everyday household items can become almost anything in the hands of a preschooler.

🎨 Why is pretend play so important?
Through imaginative play, children build creativity, strengthen language skills, practice problem-solving, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Independence is starting to bloom! At this age, toddlers are learning new words, following simple directions, becoming more physically confident, and developing very clear ideas about what they want.

💚 Development Tip: Offer simple choices throughout the day: “Would you like the red cup or the blue cup?” Giving two appropriate choices encourages independence while helping your toddler feel confident and involved.

🌱 Big feelings often come with growing independence. Calm, consistent support helps toddlers learn how to navigate them.

At The Nurture Tree, we believe that providing exceptional care begins with truly knowing and understanding each child and their family.

From time to time, our educators may ask questions about your child—their routines, sleep, eating habits, development, behaviours, interests, experiences at home, or changes happening within their world. We understand that some questions may feel personal, but please know they are always asked with care and with one important purpose: to help us provide the best possible care for your child.

Children communicate their needs in many different ways. Sometimes a change in behaviour, emotions, sleep, appetite, or participation can tell us that a child may need a little extra comfort, understanding, consistency, or support. The more we understand about your child's individual needs and experiences, the better we can respond with compassion and create an environment where they feel safe, secure, and understood.

We ask questions because you know your child best. Your insight helps us understand the whole child and allows us to work together as a team. Open communication between families and educators helps us maintain consistency between home and child care, recognize changes, celebrate milestones, and provide support when challenges arise.

Our questions are never intended to judge or make assumptions about your family. They come from a place of genuine care, professional responsibility, and our commitment to understanding how we can do better for every child entrusted to us.

We also encourage you to ask us questions and share what you are noticing at home. When families and educators communicate openly, we create a stronger circle of care around your child.

AGE & STAGE | 12–18 MONTHS

Development Tip: Encourage Exploration

At this age, little ones are busy discovering how the world works! Create safe opportunities for your child to move, climb, carry, push, pull, touch, and explore.

Try this: Place a few safe, interesting objects around the room and let your child decide what to explore. Follow their lead and talk about what they discover.

Every little adventure builds confidence, coordination, and curiosity.

While preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle school highschool and even post secondary school teachers are off for the summer, Early Childhood Educators are still at it. All year round….without winter break, without a spring break, without a summer break, without a fall break. Our days off are few and far between and if we seem a little stressed, we probably are. We do manage on iced coffees!

Fort Rocky Clubhouse is a project I’ve been working on for a few years. This is the season to build it. The clubhouse will be designed by The Nurture Tree with our unique program for child development and family & community connection.

We’re excited to share our vision for Fort Rocky Clubhouse, a much-needed community space designed to support the children, youth, and families of Rocky Mountain House and the surrounding area.

Unfortunately, we’ve hit a roadblock—we haven’t been able to find a suitable location on our own. To bring this important project to life, we need the support of our community.

Do you know of a building, vacant space, or potential partnership opportunity that could become the future home of Fort Rocky Clubhouse?

This facility will provide a welcoming place for children to learn, play, connect, and create lasting memories while strengthening our community for years to come.

We are extremely excited to announce that Condor Craft Club will be offering Adventureland Summer Day Camps at the Condor Community Centre. I wonder if you can find our mystery guest this year. Day camps will be on Mondays and Wednesdays. Space is limited, so make sure to sign up early.
