Join me in preparing my multi-age, multi-ability learners to spend the year engaged in their learning! Making sure I meet ALL of the structured literacy outcomes in ALL subjects areas. I also am making sure these kiddos become critical thinkers who are NOT just robots that can pass a test or regurgitate information - but engage in thinking and discussion and prove their understanding with evidence! It’s a tall order, but I know it’s what will set them up for success to be confident and competent learners. I still get PUMPED about a sweet teacher lanyard and an apron going into my 18th year of teaching. I’m supposed to be doing way more important stuff right now.. but c’mon… this is my best lanyard yet.

Today’s session we focused on the two sounds for long u. I had them look at the sound wall and then grabbed a bell off of my reading trolley and played a game where they had to listen to whether I was saying oooo or yuuuuu - this often requires a lot of practice for kids. You can turn almost any practice skill into a quick game to keep them on their toes.

Using one of our favourite board games in summer tutoring today, but pairing it with our current phonics passage! Using board games of any kind with kids, but adapting it by having them read words, sentences or spelling before they take their turn is a great summer engagement strategy to keep up skills over the summer. Don’t let your kids skills slide this summer!

Reflecting on my last Sunday of the year to prep for the week ahead. It’s been a beautiful year with so many incredible students and staff. I’m reflecting that I still get to run my own incredible little school 12 years later. I get to meet kids where they’re at and help them reach their potential. It’s been the gift of a lifetime. Wishing all teachers a good final week of school. I hope all teachers feel as lucky as I do, but I have a feeling not all of them do. Because I get to do education in a way that is supportive and grounding and makes a difference and honours kids.
