In 2009, Westlake Hockey Development had the opportunity of offering our hockey development services to the incredible community of Mistissini, Québec, in the Cree Nation. We then proceeded to spend significant parts of the next 6 summers up north, as well as an entire winter. Beyond the day-to-day hockey offerings, these experiences went well beyond sport.
These experiences were a rude awakening and reality check to what we had been taught was Quebec and Canadian history in high school.
The knowledge and education that came from these experiences was a general understanding of significant injustice to what these incredible people have endured for decades, even centuries. We learned of the attempts of colonization and, essentially, genocide. Truly disheartening stories and realities, that are finally coming to National attention.
The sad reality is that, although residential schools do not exist today, too many people do not know the TRUTH. Racism and aggression towards our First Nations continue, and it was witnessed too often when travelling to other communities around the province with our hockey teams. The TRUTH is we are walking on native land and we must acknowledge this. It is a privilege, not a right, and we must display gratitude. The TRUTH is Our native people had to endure countless acts and attempts of injustice related to children being stolen from their families and communities. The TRUTH is that our native people were not even permitted to live normal lives as they knew and were forced to live a certain way by white people. Their traditions, their beliefs, even their languages, stolen. This list can most likely go on and on.
Since these amazing experiences, and change of perspective and reality, it has been a goal to share these stories and TRUTHS about our amazing First Nations communities. It is rewarding to see this movement occurring, and to also learn of the legacy Gord Downie left with the organization and the positive effects it is having, among many other important influencers around the country. However, if we are not listening and learning of these TRUTHS, then we are not helping the reconciliation process. This is not something that heals quickly. These families and communities will always have to live with these realities forever. That is why we must share and educate, and we must always demonstrate gratitude and remorse. Otherwise we can never expect forgiveness.
The Westlake personnel made so many friendships and positive encounters in Mistissini, that we cherish today and will for a lifetime. We are forever grateful to so many for welcoming us into their community and homes. We thank you for being the people you are, and we “move” with you to share the TRUTH.
