Unlike traditional raku, which leaves a glazed, shiny, or metallic surface, naked raku produces a matte, smooth, and, as the name suggests, "naked" finished surface. Check out all our potters' finished pieces!

In naked raku, the goal is to use combustible materials that burn, smoke, and leave carbon residue on the hot, exposed ceramic surface. The best materials depend on the desired, often unpredictable, patterns—ranging from soft, cloudy smoke to fine, crisp black lines. ⁠

Some of these combustibles include: horse or human hair, feathers, leaves, pine needles or seaweed, yarn, coffee grounds, sugar, orange peels and more.

Last year, some of our potters went to a raku firing. We shared some photos at the time and went through the raku process, but we never got around to sharing the photos from naked raku!⁠

Naked raku is a ceramic firing technique known for its delicate patterns and smoky, marble-like surfaces.
