Introduction to the New SAT

Although colleges are avoiding putting too much emphasis on scores and adopting a holistic methodology for the selection of prospective students, high scores in SAT are still valued by admission committee today, especially at competitive colleges.

The most prominent survey, US NEWS, makes SAT score a huge category for ranking the schools. Today, almost every competitive 4-year college awards scholarships to entice academic talent, and their assessment of “talent” is the SAT / ACT score.

In 2016, a redesigned version of SAT was firstly launched in the spring, and the new SAT has introduced many major changes.

--The SAT is now scored out of 1600.
--The Reading and Writing sections on the old SAT have been combined into a single section in the new SAT, with a maximum score of 800.
--The Math section is still scored out of 800.
--Instead of five answer choices for each question, there will be only four.

The SAT is generally a challenging test. The SAT reading requires students’ extensive knowledge of words and in-depth comprehension of the reading passages, which most non-native English speaking students find extremely hard. For these students, building up a decent vocabulary is the most crucial part in test preparation.

The Math section in SAT general test is relatively easy for students with the Eastern Asian educational background. However, most STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) faculties in competitive colleges require SAT Subject Test on math, physics, and other subjects, which covers a much wider area.
