Wonderful Work Wednesday 💛

Today’s work comes from the Culture area of our Montessori classroom —learning about our community, helping others, and giving back.

Terry Fox 🇨🇦 is a Canadian hero and part of our little yellow school story.

Each year, our children bring in a toonie for our “Toonies for Terry” jar, which we send to the Terry Fox Foundation. We hold our own Terry Fox Run 🏃‍♀️ 🏃‍♂️ at our soccer field.

Along the way, we talk about Terry, his life, and the importance of giving back and helping others.

One summer, one of our students visited the Terry Fox Monument in Northern Ontario and brought that experience back to school in a little book he made for me.

Small acts. Big hearts. 💛 🇨🇦

🌻 Wonderful Work Wednesday

Today's activity comes from the Practical Life area of our Montessori classroom.

A giant sunflower head, a pair of tweezers, and a bowl ready to catch the seeds. The children carefully tweeze each seed, one at a time, strengthening their three-finger grasp, fine-motor control, and eye-hand coordination.

There is concentration in the careful tweezing, purpose in the work, and the quiet satisfaction of watching the bowl slowly fill.

What could be more perfect for this time of year? 🌻

Wonderful Work Wednesday ✨

Today's material comes from the Language area of our Montessori classroom.

One word becomes two, then a sentence… and before long, there is a story. ❤️

The Story Alphabet gives our older CASA children the opportunity to put their ideas into words and create their own little stories. Letters and words can be moved and rearranged on the work mat, allowing children to explore writing, spacing, capital letters and punctuation while keeping their focus on what they want to say.

And the little stories they create are often such a delight to read. ❤️

This work continues to grow with the child into the Montessori Lower Elementary years.

Wonderful Work Wednesday 🌼

Yesterday brought the sweetest reminder of the connections made at our little yellow school. 🏫

One of our recent graduates began Grade 1, and two older graduates from our little yellow school looked for her at recess to support her as she began this new chapter. 💛

One of the beautiful things about a Montessori mixed-age classroom is the natural way older children guide, support, and care for the younger ones.

It touched my heart to see that same spirit continue beyond the classroom.

What started at our little yellow school continues. 💕

Growing, changing, becoming — and eventually finding the courage to venture into the world.

As a new school year begins, we are thinking of all of our former students and the many different journeys they are beginning. 💕

Wonderful Work Wednesday 🌿

Today's material comes from the Arithmetic area of our Montessori classroom, the bead chains.

Counting, counting, counting…

Montessori bead chains give children the opportunity to practice counting while beginning to discover the patterns and relationships within numbers.

The chains introduce skip counting in a very concrete, hands-on way—and this work continues into the Montessori elementary years, providing an indirect preparation for multiplication.

What looks like simple counting is quietly laying the foundation for more complex mathematical thinking.

This is how we learn—one bead at a time. 💛

Wonderful Work Wednesday 🌟

Today's material comes from the Arithmetic area of our Montessori classroom. The Montessori Stamp Game is another step along the child’s journey from the concrete to the abstract.

Unlike the Golden Bead material, where quantity is physically represented, the stamps are all the same size. The child is beginning to work with numbers and symbols without the quantity being represented physically. (The photos show children solving division and addition questions.)

A beautiful example of Montessori’s gradual path toward abstraction. 🌿

Wonderful Work Wednesday 🌸

Today's material comes from the Sensorial area of our Montessori classroom.

Sometimes, the most wonderful work happens when a child takes something familiar and sees it in a completely new way.

The Pink Tower and Brown Stair are Montessori materials that help children develop visual discrimination, coordination, and an understanding of size and dimension. Our youngest explorer took both familiar materials and created something different.

Look closely, and you can see the concentration, precision, and care as each piece is carefully placed—and the wonderful sense of pride and accomplishment when the work is complete. 💗

Wonderful Work Wednesday 🐟🦴🦆 Today's material comes from the Zoology area of our Montessori classroom.

One of the joys of our Zoology work was exploring the natural world through real objects, specimens, and living experiences.

As we studied the five classes of vertebrates, the children examined animal skeletons, a shark jaw, shark teeth, and bird nests. Our learning came to life with an incubator in our classroom, where we watched duck eggs develop and experienced the life cycle of a duck right before our eyes.

They observed, questioned, compared, and discovered — learning Zoology not just through books, but through real, hands-on experiences.

This is the beauty of Montessori learning: see it, touch it, observe it, and wonder. 🌿✨

✨ Wonderful Work Wednesday ✨

Today's material comes from the Language area of our Montessori classroom.

The Montessori chalkboard provides an important bridge between early hand preparation and writing on paper. As children practice letters and numerals, they refine their pencil grip, strengthen the hand, and develop control of movement. Just as importantly, the chalkboard invites repetition. Mistakes can be easily erased, allowing children to self-correct, repeat the exercise, and gain confidence before moving to pencil and paper. In Montessori, every repetition lays the foundation for future success.
