This is something I see all the time as an ADHD Coach.
People often assume that if they are not starting, following through, or getting into motion, the problem must be motivation. That they do not want it badly enough. That they are lazy. That they need more discipline.
What is usually happening is the task has too much friction attached to it.
Maybe the first step is unclear.
Maybe there are too many hidden steps.
Maybe the task feels boring, overwhelming, exposed, or emotionally loaded.
Maybe your brain does not know how to enter it.
Maybe the gap between intention and action is simply bigger than people realize.
Your ADHD brain is hitting resistance the exact moment it needs to begin.
This is why the right support matters.
🚫Not more shame.
🚫Not harsher self-talk
Support that helps you understand where the friction is, which executive functions are under strain, and what makes the start line easier for you to cross.
If this sounds familiar, I offer a free 45-minute ADHD coaching session. Comment FREE SESSION or use the link in my bio to book.

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of ADHD. You can know the deadline, know the steps, know it matters, and still struggle to start, stay with it, organize it, or follow through.
That's because ADHD is closely tied to executive function challenges, and executive functions are the brain’s self-management skills: the skills that help you begin, plan, focus, remember, regulate, prioritize, and complete tasks.
So when executive functions are under strain, life can look confusing from the outside. It can look like procrastination, inconsistency, forgetfulness, emotional reactivity, avoidance, missed steps, or not living up to your potential.
The issue is difficulty turning intention into action.
That is why so many adults with ADHD carry so much shame. They do not have a knowledge deficit. They often have a support gap.
And when you understand executive functions, you stop asking, “Why can’t I just do it?” and start asking, “What part of this is hard for my brain right now?”

If you only start when it is almost too late, that is not always a motivation problem.
For many ADHD brains, the task does not fully register until the urgency is close enough to feel real. Not laziness. Not lack of care. An executive function pattern.

ADHD is not a lack of ambition. It is a gap between intention and action.
That is what makes ADHD so painful for so many adults: you can care deeply, know exactly what needs to happen, and still struggle to start, organize, persist, or follow through. ADHD is tied to executive function and self-regulation difficulties, which is why the issue is so often not desire — it is ex*****on.
It's often about the brain skills that help turn goals into action being under strain: task initiation, working memory, inhibition, persistence, and self-regulation.
You can be ambitious and still feel stuck.
Driven and still avoid the task.
Capable and still struggle to follow through.
That is not laziness.
That is not a character flaw.
That is an executive function gap.
If this hits home, I offer a free 45-minute ADHD coaching session to help you understand what is actually getting in the way and what support might fit your brain better.

A client came into session spiralling after a slower week in her business.
There were fewer inquiries, less momentum, and more space than usual in her calendar. And before she even had real evidence that anything was wrong, her brain had already filled in the blanks.
Maybe people are losing interest.
Maybe I’m doing everything wrong.
Maybe this is the start of everything falling apart.
That's catastrophizing.
It is what happens when the brain jumps to the worst-case scenario and reacts like it is already true.
And when your executive functions are overloaded, that spiral can happen fast.
Because for so many adults with ADHD, the struggle is not just the situation itself. It is the meaning the brain assigns to the situation.
The slow week becomes proof.
The dip becomes identity.
The uncertainty becomes danger.
So in session, we slowed it down.
We named what was happening.
We separated facts from fear.
We looked at what was actually true, not just what felt true in the moment.
And from there, we could get back to the real next step instead of staying stuck in the spiral.
That is why support matters.
Not more shame.
Not harsher self-talk.
Support that helps you slow the spiral, name what is happening, and come back to what is actually true.
If this pattern hits home, your brain may just need more support than blame.

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of ADHD, especially for entrepreneurs.
Because from the outside, it can look like procrastination, inconsistency, or not caring enough.
But from the inside, it often feels like this: You know exactly what needs to get done. You care about it. You have probably thought about it all day. And still, you cannot seem to cross the threshold into action.
That is not laziness. That is executive dysfunction.
Task initiation is an executive function skill. It is part of the brain’s ability to activate, regulate, prioritize, and move into action.
So when starting feels disproportionately hard, the issue is often not character. It is support.
This is why so many adults with ADHD live in a painful gap between intention and follow-through. Not because they are incapable. Because knowing what to do and being able to do it in the moment are not the same thing.
And when you are running a business, that gap can feel even louder.
You can hold the vision. You can care deeply about your work. You can be incredibly capable. And still get stuck at the starting line.
That is exactly why understanding executive functions matters.
If this pattern feels familiar, I’m going deeper into this in my upcoming webinar on executive functions through an entrepreneur lens — including why starting, follow-through, planning, and regulation can feel so much harder with ADHD, and what actually helps.
