It is with sorrow that the Community Band acknowledges the passing of Dave Barrett, who left the world on May 3, 2026. Coming from a musical family, Dave played all manner of low brass instruments but his passion was the trombone. He was an enthusiastic member of the Community Band for many years since the 80s, and served as the board president for a time. Friends and fellow band members remember him fondly not only as an excellent player and a friendly, welcoming presence--but also a deep repository of trombone trivia and jokes! When he brought out the red trombone, you knew good times were soon to be had.
In addition to the Revelstoke Community Band, Dave also started his own jazz band in Revelstoke called the Swing Monkeys. Throughout the years, he attended many band camps and sat in with various other community bands: Royal Canadian Air Cadet Band (Trail BC), Trail Maple Leaf Band, Nelson Community Band, Plumbers Union Brass Band (Ft Steele), Delta Community Band, Little Mountain Brass Band, Rocky Mountain Community Band and others, just to name a few.
To quote one member: "Dave was a true legend. He made all of us better musicians." His dry humour was with him until the end; his friends, family, fellow musicians and music-lovers alike will miss him dearly.
There will be a celebration of life held at the Legion this Saturday, June 20 from 1-4pm. All are welcome and encouraged to wear Hawaiian shirts in Dave's honour.
