Last night, I lost someone truly special.
Blaise was a kind soul and a steady presence. He was a devoted partner, a loyal friend, and a cyclist who cared deeply about the people around him.
He was taken in a hit-and-run while doing everything right. He had his lights, his gear, and his awareness. He always rode with intention and respect for the road. He was the kind of person who made you feel seen, supported, and a little lighter just by being in the same room.
A few weeks ago, I took the photo below with the intention of posting it as a reminder to save a bit of energy after training so you can still show up for the people who love you. I never imagined how heavy that message would feel today.
Blaise lived with so much generosity and warmth. He laughed easily, cared deeply, and made every ride and every moment a little better. Remembering him makes it impossible not to think about how we all move through the world and the impact we have on each other.
Cycling gives us freedom, joy, and purpose, but it only works when everyone on the road shares the responsibility of keeping each other safe. If you’re driving, riding, or even just crossing the street, please slow down. Look twice. Give space. The person next to you is someone’s whole world. Look after one another. And hold tight to the people who make your life brighter, the way Blaise did for all of us.
