Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining my friend Laura Tendler to be a judge at the annual Glen Anaquod Memorial Tipi Raising Competition at the University of Regina.

It was fun, competitive and full of laughter, and I learned so much!

To raise a tipi successfully, you need communication and collaboration. People need to understand their role while also paying attention to what everyone else is doing. You need to slow down enough to make sure things are being done correctly, because when the foundation isn’t right, everything that comes after it is affected.

And when something doesn’t work, you don’t just keep going and hope for the best. You stop, correct it and try again.

A solid foundation matters. Details matter. Doing things correctly matters. And sometimes, the fastest way forward is to stop and fix what isn’t working.

I also loved the opportunity to meet so many new people and learn more about the cultural teachings and traditions connected to the tipi. It was a wonderful reminder that learning happens when we step outside our usual circles, listen to others, and work alongside people who bring different experiences and perspectives.

At Joshua Tree, we talk a lot about systems alignment by bringing people, perspectives and pieces of a system together so that they can work better together.

Yesterday, I saw teams of four people collaborate with the shared goal of raising a tipi in 20 minutes. There was a whole lot of communication, trust, correction, patience and attention to detail along the way.

Better collaboration creates better outcomes.

Today I had the privilege of attending Caring Hearts Saskatchewan’s World Su***de Prevention Day event on behalf of Joshua Tree Learning Centre.

It was a powerful reminder of the importance of coming together as a community to have open, honest, and compassionate conversations about su***de and mental health.

Throughout the event, individuals shared their lived experiences with courage and vulnerability. We heard from MLA Lorie Carr about provincial initiatives aimed at supporting mental health, and from Elders and Indigenous leaders who offered important perspectives on su***de, healing, connection, and hope through an Indigenous lens.

I was also inspired to learn more about Lincoln’s Life Mattered, a Saskatchewan-based non-profit organization dedicated to su***de awareness, ASIST training, and fundraising to help provide counselling and support for individuals and families who need it most.

Events like this remind us that mental health and disability are not individual issues—they are community issues. When people are struggling, the responsibility to respond with compassion, understanding, and support belongs to all of us.

Meaningful change happens when governments, service providers, community organizations, families, and individuals work together. By creating space for conversation, reducing stigma, and increasing access to support, we can help ensure that no one feels alone in their struggle.

Thank you to Caring Hearts Saskatchewan for bringing our community together for such an important conversation.

A referral isn’t collaboration. We can send a referral, share a report, or copy someone on an email and still leave a family feeling like they’re managing everything themselves.

Collaboration means staying connected. It’s talking, listening and sharing perspectives and knowing exactly what we’re working on together and how.

Having more professionals involved doesn’t necessarily mean better support. Having the right people connected in the right way makes all the difference in the world.

That’s where better collaboration begins.

This past Saturday, I left I Love Regina Day with a full heart.

At Joshua Tree Learning Centre, we created a collaborative positive affirmation board and invited people to share messages of encouragement, hope, and kindness.

By the end of the day, the board was covered with uplifting words from people across our community.

My favourite part wasn’t just reading the messages, it was watching people stop to read what others had written. You could see smiles, moments of reflection, and genuine connection happening right in front of the board.

Sometimes we underestimate the power of a few positive words.

Thank you, Regina, for reminding us that kindness is alive and well in our city. The sense of community, support, and positivity we witnessed was inspiring.

Every message mattered. Every person contributed. And together, we created something bigger than any one of us could have created alone.

❤️ Regina, you are pretty amazing.

I have learned so much about leadership from my horses. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that you can’t force trust.

The harder you try to control a horse, the harder it can be to build a true partnership.

People aren’t all that different. We can’t create great collaboration by simply telling people what to do.

People need to feel safe. Trust grows when they feel safe to ask questions, disagree, make mistakes and learn.

Mindset Shift #3

From control → to trust.

Whether we’re working with horses, leading a team, or supporting families, trust creates the foundation for meaningful collaboration.

And when we collaborate better, the people we support experience better outcomes.

🐴 Better collaboration. Better outcomes.

Meaningful change happens when we ask, “What can we accomplish together?”

This year, Joshua Tree Learning Centre is proud to collaborate with REAL District to help create a more welcoming experience for children and families at the Queen City Ex.

Together, we’re supporting the Sensory-Friendly Kidway and a Quiet Zone space designed so that children who experience sensory sensitivities can enjoy one of our city’s favourite summer traditions in a way that feels safe, comfortable, and inclusive.

For us, this is about more than creating a quieter space. It’s about creating a community where every child feels they belong.

This partnership reflects a belief that guides our work every day:

Mindset #2: Collaboration Creates Belonging.

When organizations bring their unique strengths, experiences, and perspectives together around a shared purpose, barriers begin to disappear, children feel more included, families feel more supported, and communities become stronger.

Real change doesn’t happen when organizations work in isolation. It happens when schools, community organizations, businesses, recreation, and families come together to create solutions that are bigger than any one of us could create alone.

Thank you to REAL District for your vision and partnership in making the Queen City Ex a more inclusive experience for children and families.

Belonging isn’t created by one organization.

It’s created when we build it together.

One small mindset shift can completely change the way we support people. Instead of asking,

“How do we fix this?”

Try asking,

“What does this person or family need most right now?”

It’s a simple question, but it changes the conversation so people feel heard, professionals become more aligned, and together, we build support that truly meets the need.

Mindset Shift #1

Move from solving problems to understanding needs.

Magic happens when we stop asking, “Who owns this?”and start asking:

“How can we build this together?”

I believe the future is not about creating more separate services. It’s about creating stronger connections between the people and organizations already doing incredible work.
