We’re delighted to share the news that our grad Lowell Dean will be the 2026 recipient of the University of Regina’s Distinguished Professional Alumni Award.

The Alumni Awards will be handed out on September 24th, and Lowell is in excellent company.

The announcement stated that: Lowell Dean is an accomplished filmmaker whose work has earned national and international recognition while helping to define and sustain Saskatchewan’s film and television industry. As a writer and director, Lowell has directed six feature films since 2013 – a level of creative output that is rare in the Canadian industry.

Following the elimination of Saskatchewan’s film tax credit in 2012, the province became one of the most challenging environments in the country for film production. While many industry professionals left, Lowell remained committed to building his career at home—choosing to film in Saskatchewan whenever possible, championing local talent, and bringing the province’s stories to wider audiences. 

Lowell has played a pivotal leadership role in strengthening Saskatchewan’s screen industries, serving as Saskatchewan Chair of the Directors Guild of Canada, and as a board member of the Saskatchewan Motion Picture Industry Association (now Screen Saskatchewan). His career reflects not only professional excellence, but a deep commitment to community, mentorship, and the growth of Saskatchewan’s creative industries.

ScreenSask’s Apprenticeship Stream Program officially launched on April 1, 2026.

This program helps Saskatchewan producers build crew capacity while giving emerging local crew valuable on-set experience.

Through the initiative, eligible productions can access financial incentives to help offset the costs of bringing out-of-province crew to Saskatchewan when qualified local crew are unavailable. In return, each incoming crew member (“mentor”) is paired with a local apprentice for hands-on training within that department.

The goal of the program is to attract more production to Saskatchewan while creating more employment and long-term career opportunities for local crew.

It’s still hard to process this, but Professor Gerald Saul is retiring from the Department of Film this summer.

Gerald has been at the centre of things for the past 27 years: He’s taught hundreds of students; he’s supervised more graduate students than anyone in the Faculty of MAP;
he’s served terms as Department Head of Film; he’s made dozens of film and hundreds of paintings.

This just scratches the surface of the many contributions Gerald has made to , and the . Gerald always stepped up when something was needed.

We’ll miss having in the classrooms and running into him in the hallways, but we can’t wait to see what he’ll get up to with some free time.

The Faculty of MAP is hosting a reception for Gerald and for Brent Ghiglione, who’s retiring from the Department of Music.

Thank you for packing the house for the opening night of my documentary "Clay, Creativity, and the Comeback". That was a lot of fun and a really cool way to recognize all those volunteers that saved Medalta.

It’s Jane’s Walk weekend in Regina, and more than 500 cities around the world.

Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.

Jane’s Walk is named after Jane Jacobs (1916–2006), a writer and activist best known for her writings about cities that upended the ideas of modernist city planning and building, and offered a new vision of diverse, fine-grained cities made for and by ordinary people.

There are six Jane’s Walks taking place in Regina this weekend. They’re free and no registration is needed - you just show up.
