What should parents know about Saskatchewan’s new early literacy assessments?

Saskatchewan is taking steps to identify students who may need additional support with reading through its Actions to Improve Early Literacy (AIEL) initiative.

But what do these assessments actually tell us?

Early literacy screeners help teachers identify areas where a child may need extra support with foundational reading skills. They’re one piece of the puzzle — not the whole picture of your child as a reader.

The goal isn’t just to get through a reading assessment. It’s to understand how children are learning to read so we can support them along the way.

Things we wish every parent knew about learning to read.

Reading is so much more than recognizing words on a page.

Sometimes, a child needs help connecting letters to sounds. Sometimes, they need practice sounding out unfamiliar words. And sometimes, they can read the words just fine but struggle to understand what they mean.

The key is figuring out which part is difficult so we can give them the right support.

Every child learns differently, and with the right strategies, practice, and encouragement, progress is possible. 🤍

Looking for something to do with the kids that is actually fun and gets their brains working?

Add the Saskatchewan Science Centre to your Sunday list.

It’s the kind of place where learning doesn’t feel like learning. Kids can experiment, build, test ideas, solve problems and explore science through hands-on exhibits. And if you’re looking to make a whole afternoon of it, you can add a stage show, STEAMcity, an IMAX experience or a walk through Wascana Centre.

Our favourite part? You don’t need to turn it into a lesson. Let them play. Let them wonder. Let them ask questions.

Then, on the drive home, ask one simple question:

“What was the coolest thing you figured out today?”
