Regina improv artists reflect on pandemic experience in online international event Regina artists will be performing in Improvisation Festival 2021, a worldwide virtual event hosted by the University of Guelph on Friday.

There is one week left to submit proposals for the McGill colloquium, Echoes of a Distance: Music, Protest and Community in Confined Times (November 19-20, 2021). Proposals are due May 28, 2021.

"How can sound and music participate in protest without access to the streets and spaces of collective music creation? How does a collective sound when there is no actual gathering possible? Alternatively, when social movements take to the streets or occupy a territory despite public health regulations – as has happened on many occasions around the globe since the beginning of the pandemic (Black Lives Matter, Wet’suwet’en resistance, Belarus, Poland, Chile, Myanmar, The Netherlands, to mention only few) – what has changed on a sonic level? How can sound and music testify to the ways our current isolation has affected our capacity to collectively organize? And in this context, what can sound-based practices grounded in improvisation bring to the ongoing social and political struggles?

In order to understand the political impact of the potentialities opened up by music creation in times of curfews and restrictions on the assembly of physical bodies, the International Institute of Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) at McGill University invites researchers and creators to contribute to two days of study November 19-20, 2021."

GETTING BY - The Art of Resourcefulness and Making Do

Parkour is a movement art and philosophy born out of the suburbs of Paris. The original parkour artists referred to themselves as traceurs. It’s routes and roots can be traced back to Georges Hebert, who wrote The Natural Method, A Practical Guide to Physical Education (Translated). Hebert desired to (re)introduce French citizens to athleticism and his unique brand of physical culture through his Natural Methods. Hébert’s approach to the body and athletics combined physically rigorous movement as well as a particular ethics. This 4 week Introduction to Parkour will be a space to:
Practice seeing your environment in a new way.
Orient to the pleasure of movement & play.
Imagine ways to navigate around, across, through, over and under your environment.
This outdoor, socially-distanced movement exploration will be followed by conversation together, reflecting on our lived experiences.

Every Tuesday evening through May and June, from 9-9:30pm CST, you are invited to attend a meditation and improvised soundscape offering from Stacey Bliss, PhD. You will be guided through a 30-minute meditative intention to wind down, relax, and rejuvenate. This includes guided breathing practice, improvised soundscape with gongs and bowls, and silent meditation.

All are welcome - from fidgety skeptics to advanced practitioners.

The Regina Improvisation Studies Centre is happy to partner with Holophon Audio Arts through the Multiplay project to provide a series of online workshops. Coming up tomorrow evening at 7 pm (Regina/CST), participants are invited to learn about 'sound objects' and how this concept can be useful in experimental music composition, film sound, game sound design, and beyond.

All workshops are free to attend and everyone is welcome.

"This is a continuation of Part 1 of this arduino workshop. To get the most out of this workshop, participants might want to purchase an Arduino Nano Sense board (https://store.arduino.cc/usa/nano-33-ble-sense). We will be looking at this brand new Arduino and what it can do. This new board contains a series of interesting sensors, we will try them out by running various demo programs and discuss how it could be integrated into your artistic practice - sound based or otherwise."

This talk is concerned with the experiences and musical practices of important saxophonist and improviser Peter Brötzmann. It will illuminate the creative tension between the realms of music and politics that shaped his music’s production and reception during the latter half of the 1960s and situate his work within the larger context of the rise of the New Left and the West German student protest movement during this period. Moreover, this talk will elucidate the building of alliances between segments of the West German student protest movement and the Black Freedom Movement in the US as an important backdrop for Brötzmann’s engagement with black experimentalism."
