Today, our Grade 4 and Grade 8 students teamed up for a vertical mentoring activity!

Working together, students explored Indigenous artifacts and identified items that would have been important for surviving and preparing for winter. It was a great opportunity for students to learn from one another, share ideas, and connect their learning to Indigenous knowledge and traditional ways of life.

Learning is always better together!

Today, our GSTS community wore orange shirts in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Throughout the day, students participated in a variety of learning activities, including exploring Indigenous games and traditions.

Last week, students also had the opportunity to explore the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada Floor Map, an interactive resource developed in collaboration with Indigenous educators, knowledge keepers, and communities. The map helps students explore Indigenous histories, languages, and cultures from a national perspective.

Today and every day, we are committed to learning, listening, remembering, and continuing the work of reconciliation. 🧡

From field to food bank!

On September 22, our Grade 7 classes headed out to a local potato field for a hands-on learning experience in potato gleaning—collecting potatoes that remained in the field after the main harvest and otherwise may have gone to waste.

Students learned how potatoes are mass-produced and harvested while getting to work gathering potatoes for their own families. Many students headed home with a backpack full of potatoes, and together we were able to donate an incredible 980 pounds of potatoes to the Red Deer Food Bank!

We also kept some of the biggest potatoes to turn into French fries—a delicious way to wrap up our learning!

A huge thank you to the local farmer for welcoming our students and giving them this opportunity to learn, contribute to our community, and reduce food waste.
